Kids invited to enjoy "Summer in February" at Eastfield Mall

SPRINGFIELD For the sixth year, Eastfield Mall is building a giant sandbox to provide a warm, summer-themed place for children to play for free to escape the winter blues. The sandbox is termed the "beach" and is the major attraction at the mall's annual "Summer in February" event. The 400 square foot beach requires over 15,000 pounds of sand. It also features a boardwalk and convenient seating for parents and caregivers to utilize while children play.

From Feb. 13 through 28 the beach in Macy's Court will be open to children 12 and under, with parental supervision. Parents can bring their children to the beach at Eastfield Mall where they can relax while they watch their kids build sand castles and interact with other children.

Mindy Slonka of Belchertown loves taking her children Adam, 3, and Abbey, 5, to Summer in February. "I am always looking for some place to take my children so they can get out of the house and play. I love the sandbox because my children can play and I can relax and chat with other moms. It's a great place in the winter," said Slonka.

Karen Roy of Wilbraham also enjoys bringing her daughter to Summer in February. "Sydney just loves to play in the giant sandbox. Plus, we always run into someone we know, so to her it feels like a really cool play date in the winter. I love it because I can get some shopping done while I am there," said Roy.

Each child will receive a free Dairy Queen kid's cone and can play all day in the sand at no cost. Coupons for the Dairy Queen kids cone are available at Mall Services.

Summer in February is located in Macy's Court. Beach hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. Take advantage of this free opportunity to let your children play at the beach.
