"Watershed Waltz," a puppet show for children of all ages and their families, will take place at 11 a.m. at the historic, wheelchair-accessible North Hall building at 40 Searle Road, off Route 66 in Huntington.
In this imaginative and educational puppet show, Marmalade Productions imparts to youngsters the vital importance of the river watershed. An 11-year-old boy teaches his mother about the watershed with help from a woodpecker, macro invertebrates and Alvin the Brook Trout.
The North Hall Arts Festival kicks off its 2010 series of events with the "Watershed Waltz" on May 8, presented by Marmalade Productions.
"With song, storytelling and puppetry, children learn about the waters' many forms, how it travels and how it is cleansed by the soil," said Meredyth Babcock of Marmalade Productions. Original music for the show was composed by JoAnne Spies and the Beeline Ramblers.
"Kids go away with a clear understanding of why it is important that we understand, enjoy and protect our watershed," Babcock said.
The Watershed Waltz program is produced in conjunction with the Westfield River Watershed Association; the Westfield River Wild & Scenic Committee; and the Highland Communities Initiative, a program of the Trustees of Reservations
The puppet show is free for children and by donation for adults at the door. Advance registration is not required.
In the afternoon, a program titled "Stream Explorers" will bring kids age 10 and up outdoors from 1 to 2:30 p.m. to explore a "live" stream on the North Hall property.
Space in the afternoon workshop is limited to 15 participants; although free, pre-registration is required by calling North Hall Association at 667-5543.
In case of inclement weather, the afternoon program will take place indoors.
Those attending the full day should bring a brown bag lunch; drinks and snacks will be provided.
