EAST LONGMEADOW
CHEERLEADING
Parents of E.L. students presently in grades 2 - 7 who wish to tryout for cheerleading should report to Birchland on April 29, 30 and MAY 1 as follows: grades 2 & 3, 5 - 6 p.m.; 4 & 5, 6 - 7 p.m.; 6 & 7, 7 - 8 p.m. Participants are required to attend all three nights. For more info, call 525-5437.

SENIOR FRIENDSHIP CLUB
Elder Law Atty. John Roberts will speak about "Planning for Elder Care at Home" following lunch on May 1 at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 North Main St. A local contractor, Steve Andwood, will also be here. He will provide info on planning and designing changes to your home that will be safe for elder living. The program begins at 12:30 p.m. and the public is invited to attend. Luncheon is roast pork w/gravy, mashed potato, butternut squash and peaches. Call 525-5436 at least one day in advance for noon lunch reservations.

UPCOMING JEWELRY CLASSES
Just in time for Mother's Day and commencements! Sandy Merrill's monthly jewelry class will take place at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 North Main St., on May 5 at 9:30 a.m. Cost for instruction is $2, and supplies are extra. No registration necessary. In addition, Sandy will host a special class on May 14 at 1 p.m. for students to create a decorative zipper pull/purse embellishment and/or bookmark. This class requires a $2 deposit, and you must register as class size is limited to 20. The total cost of the class will not exceed $8 (including deposit).

HEARING SCREENINGS
Hampden Hearing will be conducting free hearing screenings by appointment on May 9 from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. Call the Senior Center at 525-5436.

COLLABORATIVE "F" FORT DANCE PERFORMANCE
Collaborative "F" Fort Dance, an emerging modern dance company, will perform at the Pleasant View Senior Center on May 14 at 3:30 p.m. This energetic company consists of choreographers and dancers with extensive dance backgrounds who live in Western Mass. and northern Connecticut. The public is invited to attend this free performance. Please call the Senior Center at 525-5436 if you plan to attend, as light refreshments will be served.

COMMODITIES DISTRIBUTION
Commodities will be distributed on May 21 from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 North Main St. To qualify, you must be an East Longmeadow resident of any age, and demonstrate need by showing documentation of your participation in Welfare, AFDC, Food Stamps, Fuel Assistance, WIC, SSI, Medicaid, Veteran's Aid or Head Start or sign a statement showing your Gross Yearly Income falls at or below certain amounts. You must sign up at the Senior Center and will be given a ticket which you will keep for the year. No commodities will be given without a ticket.

CHOLESTEROL SCREENINGS
Life Lab cholesterol screenings will take place at the Pleasant View Senior Center on May 23 from 8 - 11:30 a.m. by appointment (call 525-5436). Fasting is required and tests include total cholesterol HDL, LDL and triglycerides. Cost is $12.

PANCAKE BREAKFAST
The E.L. Lions Club will be hosting its annual pancake breakfast on May 17 from 8 - 11 a.m. at the ELHS cafeteria, 180 Maple St. Proceeds from the breakfast are used to support Lions Club projects in the town. For info and tickets, call Mark Beglane at 525-4463. Tickets: $5 for adults, $3 for children run 10, and can be purchased at the door. Menu: pancakes, sausage, juice or cider, milk, coffee or tea.

GREATER SPRINGFIELD
DONATE A CAR
Boys and Girls Clubs are joining together throughout Massachusetts to raise funds for their programs by seeking donated cars. Now that the price of scrap metal is at a high level, the clubs can accept most any car. The cars are sold at auction. People who would like to donate a car and support the Boys and Girls Clubs may call 800-246-0493.

SWINGLES SQUARE DANCE CLUB
Mainstream dance on May 2 (May Basket Nite). May 16 "Ice Cream Social" mainstream dance. Dances take place at the Knights of Columbus on Park Street in West Springfield from 8 - 10:30 p.m. with early rounds from 7:30 - 8 p.m. and are $6 per person. We welcome singles, couples spectators are free.

SPRING CONCERT
Southampton Community Chorus, directed by Kathy Marks, will present "A Little Bit of Broadway" on May 3 at 4 p.m. at the Congregational Church of South Hadley Falls, 11 North Main St., South Hadley. A $5 donation is requested and refreshments will follow the concert.

STAMP CLUB
The Pioneer Valley Stamp Club will meet on May 13 and 27 at the First United Church of Christ on Rte. 5 (corner of Longmeadow and Williams Streets). Activities for the evening include a mini-auction and a short meeting. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. for a shop and swap. SEPTEMBER TRIPS
The Hampden Senior Center, 104 Allen St., is planning late September trips to West Point Academy, including lunch at the Thayer Hotel and a Hudson River cruise; and a trip to the JFK Library & Museum, including lunch at Maggiano's Little Italy and shopping. GOLF LESSONS
Get ready for summer. PGA Golf Pro Bob Lake will begin a new session of golf lessons at Fenway Golf Range, corner of Porter Rd. and Allen St., East Longmeadow on May 7 - June 11 at 10 a.m. He can accommodate all levels of ability and ages and will loan equipment. Must register at 565-4150.

ATTY. DARLING SPEAKS

HOUSING AUTHORITY

BEGINNER'S LINE DANCING
Lynn Connolly will conduct beginner's line dance classes on Mondays, May 12 - June 16 from 9 - 10 a.m. in the gym at the Longmeadow Adult Center. They have a wonderful time and its great exercise. Register at 565-4150.

PIANO CONCERT
The Grammar School at Somersville is sponsoring a piano concert, "The Heart of the Concerto," performed by Michael Devine, pianist, at 3 p.m. on May 4 at the Longmeadow High School Auditorium. Music from Bach, Chopin and Beethoven will be performed. Tickets may be purchased at the door for $25 per person with a portion of the proceeds donated to the Longmeadow High School Music Department.

GIRLS LACROSSE CLINIC
Grades 1 & 2. Longmeadow Parks & Rec. is currently accepting registration for a three day lacrosse clinic for girls. The clinic will provide participants with basic fundamentals and techniques for the game of lacrosse. Participants who have their own equipment should bring it. Equipment including a stick and ball will be provided for each participant to take home with them to practice. Clinic will meet on May 3 from 10 - 11:30 a.m., May 9 from 5:30 - 7 p.m. and May 24 from 10 - 11:30 a.m. at Russell Fields. For more info and registration, visit www.lprd.net.

RULES COMMITTEE MEETING
The Rules Committee will meet May 20 at 7 p.m. at the Fire Station Community Room.

TEEN CENTER
Youths in grades 6 - 8 and their guests are welcome to enjoy a supervised evening out on Fridays from 7 - 10 p.m. at the Greenwood Center. Admission is $7 per person. All students must sign in prior to entry. School dress codes are strictly followed. Teen Center is run and staffed by area college students. Parent information packets are available on site at each teen center event. Call Cristina Judd at 565-4163 with any questions. Teen center dates are May 2, 16 and June 6.

JOHN BARKMAN MEMORIAL FISHING DERBY
A Longmeadow tradition, especially for children ages 3 - 14. Laurel Pond will be stocked with hungry trout in preparation for the derby. Kids bring their own tackle and families enjoy a great community fellowship day. There will be prizes for first fish, longest fish and most fish caught in each age division. Refreshments and bait will be available for purchase. Back this year: Touch-A-Truck! We will have some of our Parks trucks for the kids to see up close. This is a free event. Pre-registration is not required. The fishing derby will take place May 4 from 9 - 11 a.m. at Laurel Pond.

ANNUAL PANCAKE BREAKFAST

O'NEIL AT ROTARY LUNCHEON
The Springfield Rotary Club announced that retired Springfield Police Officer, foster care survivor and author Alexander O'Neil will be the Springfield Rotary Club's luncheon speaker on May 2. O'Neil will speak about his abusive foster care experience and his book "Is There any Love Down Back? The Four Boys," published in 2005.
