EAST LONGMEADOW
ALL ADULTS WELCOME
The New Beginnings Adult Education Program is ready to kick off another exciting semester at Minnechaug Regional High School. Enrichment courses will be offered beginning the week of Feb. 25. Numerous computer courses, ballroom dancing, one stroke folk art painting, beading, yoga and several health and fitness classes will also be offered. OPEN BURNING
Permits for open burning will be available through May 1. They may be purchased at the Fire Station, 150 Somers Rd., Monday - Friday from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. and Saturdays starting March 15 from 9 a.m. - noon. Cost is still $5.

RETIREMENT PARTY
There will be a retirement party in honor of Chief P. Robert Wallace of the E.L. Fire Department, March 1, Elmcrest Country Club, 105 Somersville Rd. Schedule: 6 p.m., cocktail hour; 7 p.m. dinner, DJ & dancing. Tickets are available at the E.L. Fire Department, 525-5430.

SENIOR FRIENDSHIP CLUB
The E.L. Senior Friendship Club will host a Mardi Gras Party on Feb. 7 at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 N. Main St. This is a program supported in part by a grant from the E.L. Cultural Council. Luncheon is baked chicken w/dirty rice, green beans, corn bread and mixed fruit. Call 525-5436 at least one day in advance for lunch reservations.

AARP TAX ASSISTANCE
AARP tax aide counselors will start doing income tax processing at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 N. Main St., beginning Feb. 4. Due to ongoing renovations, we can only accommodate four tax counselors, so we are giving priority to E.L. residents. Out of town residents can call us for alternate site locations. Please call early for your appointment @ 525-5436, or come in to sign up.

COMMODITIES DISTRIBUTION
Commodities will be distributed on Feb. 20 from 1 - 3 p.m. at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 N. Main St. To qualify, you must be an E.L. resident of any age, and you must demonstrate need by showing documentation of your participation in any of the following programs: Welfare, AFDC, Food Stamps, Fuel Assistance, WIC, SSI, Medicaid, Veteran's Aid, Head Start, or sign a statement showing your Gross Yearly Income falls at or below certain amounts. You must sign up at the Senior Center and will be given a ticket which you will keep for the year. No commodities will be given without a ticket.

NEW CHAIR PILATES CLASS
The Pilates Center of W. Mass. is pleased to announce a new class at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 N. Main St. This class will incorporate all the Pilates principles including core strengthening as well as balance training in a safe, effective workout. This is a six week series beginning March 12 from 9:45 - 10:45 a.m. To register, call or stop in to the Senior Center, 525-5436.

BAY PATH PRODUCTION
Bay Path College will be presenting "Destry Rides Again" in a special performance for local senior groups on Feb. 29 at 8 p.m. in the Mills Theatre located on the Bay Path College campus. GIRLS SOFTBALL MEETING
The E.L. Rec. Dept. is holding an informational girls softball meeting on Feb. 4 in the COA auditorium at 7 p.m. for parents. It is the intention of the Rec. Dept. to create a Parents Executive Board/Association for Girls Softball to help with the running of this sport. All parents who plan on enrolling their child for this spring are welcome to attend.

FALCONS SCHOOL VACATION TICKETS
The Springfield Falcons/E.L. Rec. Dept. announce a special ticket offer for the Falcons Presidents' Day game on Feb. 18 Falcons vs. Manchester Monarchs at 1 .m. Tickets will be $6 - children; $10 - adults. Free public skating from 11 a.m. - noon. Tickets will not be available at the box office. Come into the Rec. Dept.; payments can be made by check, cash or credit card. Pick up tickets at the Will Call Window, beginning at 10 a.m. day of game.

GIRLS SOFTBALL LEAGUE
The E.L. Rec. Dept. will be sponsoring a 1st/2nd grade girls softball league this year for those presently enrolled in 1st/2nd grade. Must provide own glove; cleats are optional. Come into the Rec. Dept. to register. Deadline is March 7.

SPRING SPORTS
Registrations are being taken in the office for the following spring sports P.V. & intown soccer, boys/girls lacrosse, girls softball, baseball and competitive swim. Please refer to Spring Brochure for deadlines for registering.

BASEBALL BUS TRIPS

SIDEWALK SHOVELING NOTICE
All property owners are reminded of the importance of removing snow from their sidewalks. According to town by-laws, property owners are required to remove snow from their sidewalks within 24 hours after the snow ceases to fall. Should the sidewalks become covered with ice that cannot be readily moved, property owners are required to place sand, salt or other materials on them. This is vital to allow safe passage for pedestrians. The dumping or disposing of snow in E.L. from outside of the town is prohibited. Residents are also reminded that if they have a hydrant on their front lawn, or in their immediate area, to make sure it is cleared of snow and ice.

ASH WEDNESDAY
Ash Wednesday Liturgies will be held at St. Mark's Church on Feb. 6 at 12:15 and 7 p.m. The Rev. Paul Briggs, rector, will preach on "Thirsting for God." Parishioners have been bringing palms from previous Palm Sunday services to burn to make ashes for services on Ash Wednesday. CHOCOLATE AND JEWELRY SHOW
The Valentine Chocolate and Jewelry Show will take place at the First Congregational Church on Feb. 9 from 9 a.m to 1 p.m.

ORIENTATION PROGRAM
The Administration, Guidance Dept., Department Heads and Student Council invite parents of incoming 9th graders to an Orientation Program on Feb. 14 at 6:30 p.m. in the ELHS auditorium. Parents are asked to bring the Program of Studies their student received, as it will prove beneficial.

A NIGHT OF COMEDY
The East Longmeadow Educational Endowment Fund (ELEEF) presents their 13th annual Dance for Education on March 8 at Elmcrest Country Club. This year's theme, "A Night of Comedy and Dancing," will feature comedians Harrison Stebbins and Mike Whitman of the Comedy Connection in Boston. 6 p.m. cocktail hour, 7 p.m. dinner, comedy at 8 p.m., with music 9 p.m. - midnight. BEGINNER'S DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Longmeadow Adult Center is offering a Digital Photography class on Wednesdays, March 19 - April 16 from 1 - 3 p.m. It is necessary to own a digital camera. JOURNEY TO JAZZ

SPRINGTIME IN NEW YORK CITY
Springtime will be here soon and what better way to celebrate the good weather than to spend a day strolling the streets of New York City. You plan the day to include shopping, visiting museums or just "sitting back" and enjoying all the sights and sounds of New York in the spring. Stops will be along 5th Ave. beginning at the Metropolitan Museum of Art through Canal Street in lower Manhattan. Pick up info and maps on the bus. Staff from Longmeadow Parks & Rec. BRONX ZOO TRIP
It's April school vacation week and our travels will take us to the Bronx Zoo in New York City. Visit over 4,000 animals, many in their natural habitat. Wear comfortable shoes and plan on doing some walking while visiting the recently refurbished Bronx Zoo. Our trip includes zoo admission, unlimited shuttle, cable car and several selected exhibits including the children's zoo, butterfly exhibit, reptile world and the Congo Gorilla Forest plus many more. LONGMEADOW GIRLS SOFTBALL
Girls in grades 1 - 9 are eligible to play in this spring league, which runs from April through June. Practices are one to two times per week and generally there are one to two games a week as well. Registration date: Feb. 28, 7 - 9 p.m. at the Longmeadow Community House.

"SCHOOLS OUT, LET'S PLAY"
There is limited space available for care of Longmeadow children in grades 1 - 6 during school vacation weeks, sign up now to ensure your spot! Children will take part in a wide variety of fun activities, field trips, outdoor play, etc. Send a bag lunch daily. Watch for a detailed flyer distributed through the schools. "LETTING OFF STEAM"

VACATION OPEN SWIM
Ages 10 and older or those younger accompanied by an adult can come and swim at the heated indoor pool. Changing rooms and showers are available. Lifeguard on duty. Open swim is held on Feb. 19 and 21 from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. at the LHS pool.

DIVING FOR BOWLING BALLS
We won't really be diving for bowling balls! Kids ages eight - 12 will have 90 minutes for swimming from 11 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. followed by bowling at Shaker Bowl in E. Longmeadow. A pizza lunch will be provided at the bowling alley before bowling. School bus transportation provided from the pool to the bowling alley. Program will be held Feb. 20. MEN'S BASKETBALL
Evening pick-up games at Glenbrook Gymnasium provide the opportunity for a great work out, competition and fun. Pay for the whole season in advance or pay on a walk in basis. Players must be out of high school to participate in this program. Program meets on Thursdays from 8:30 - 10 p.m. at Glenbrook Middle School. No program on no school days.

MEN'S VOLLEYBALL
This program offers a high level of play for advanced participants. Pick-up games start at 7:30 p.m. and teams call their own violations. Program meets on Wednesdays from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. at Williams Middle School Gym. No program on no school days.

SNOWMAN BUILDING CONTEST
Ages 4 - 8. Longmeadow Parks & Rec. will be hosting the first annual Snowman Building Contest! You provide the energy, attire and creativity; we will provide the hot chocolate and prizes! Prizes will be awarded for most creative, largest and most original snowman. Parent participation is required! Contest will be Feb. 16 on the Longmeadow Green in front of the Longmeadow Community House, from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. This is a free event!

PARENT & CHILD SPORT NIGHT
Ages 5 - 7. Kids, bring your parents for some non-competitive fun! Each week, we will play a different sport; tee-ball, basketball, kickball and soccer. Adult participation is required! Sport Night will meet on Wednesday nights Feb. 6 - 27 from 5:45 - 7 p.m. in the Greenwood Children's Center Gym. Register at the Longmeadow Community House.

"LETS DANCE"
Longmeadow Parks & Rec. Dept. will be hosting the annual Father-Daughter Dance. There will be lots of dancing, games and snacks. Please dress to impress! Dance will be held Feb. 9, 5 - 8 p.m. at the Longmeadow Community House. Call 565-4160 for more information or to pre-register.

AMERICAN GIRL WORKSHOP
Learn all about the latest historical doll, Julie Albright, while sewing and decorating a fabric purse using jean material and felt flowers. Julie has a purse just like the one you will be making when she was growing up in the 1970's. We will also have time to enjoy refreshments and play American Girl games. At the end of the program, there will be time to purchase some American Girl books, clothing and accessories at discounted prices. Bring a favorite doll with you! TEEN CENTER
Youths in grades 6 - 8 and their guests are welcome to come and enjoy a supervised evening out on Fridays from 7 - 10 p.m. at the Greenwood Center. All students must sign in prior to entry. School dress codes are strictly followed. Teen Center is run and staffed by area college students. Parent information packets are available on site at each teen center event. Call Crissy Alexopoulos at 565-4163 with any questions. Teen center dates are Feb. 29, March 14, 28, April 11, May 2, 16 and June 6.

AARP TAX PREPARATION ASSISTANCE
AARP tax volunteers will be providing free tax return preparation during February, March and April at the Longmeadow Adult Center. Please call to make an appointment 565-4150. AARP tax-aide volunteers work in conjunction with the IRS to bring you this service.

DOLLY & ME TEA AT STORRS LIBRARY
On Feb. 16 at 10:30 a.m., the Philip Michael Lauro II Discovery Room of the Storrs Library will host a special party for special dollies. Children who are three and older are invited to our Dolly & Me Tea Party. Everyone is welcome to wear their best party dresses and bring their favorite dolls to a 45-minute program filled with stories, snacks and crafts. Their doll is sure to have a great time meeting all the other doll friends and children and their parents will enjoy the activities. PUPPET SHOW
Join the fun as Sparky's Puppets perform "Tales of Sea and Shore" at the Storrs Library on Feb. 19 at 11 a.m. This family program invites young and old to 45 minutes of laughter and entertainment. A treasure-hunting pirate and his parrot will ask the audience to help them with clues that lead to the discovery of a treasure chest full of stories. Sparky's Puppets bring favorite children's stories with colorful hand puppets, lively humor and plenty of audience interaction. The show is designed for children ages 3 - 10. Although this event is free, tickets are needed and will be available one week in advance of the program by visiting the Philip Michael Lauro Discovery Room at the Library or calling 565-4182.

SPRINGFIELD
HUNGRY HILL CENTER EVENTS
The Hungry Hill Center's Valentine Luncheon will be Feb. 12 at noon. Menu: soup, baked chicken, oven roasted potatoes, and dessert. Tickets must be purchased by Feb. 5. Bread, milk, coffee or tea are served at all meals. Reservations can be made by calling the center at 733-9411. Chicopee Visiting Association will have a nurse at the center on Feb. 11 from 9 - 11 a.m. Hemoglobin screening along with blood pressure readings will be offered. This is a free service to area seniors.

FIRST-HOUR FORUM
The public is invited to attend the Unitarian Universalist Society of Greater Springfield's First-Hour Forum from 9 -10 a.m. held before the Sunday service in the balcony room. Forums offer presentation, dialogue and interactive conversation about current events and/or a topic of special interest. Feb. 10: Book Discussion on Peace, Part II, with Becca Bryer. Bryer and the "Peace Class" discuss the book "Speaking Peace in a World of Conflict" by M. Rosenberg; Feb. 24: On Political and Social Satire with Peter Falvey. Falvey performs these satires and has a cartoon column on the Internet. He talks about his works and the history of satire. The church is located at 245 Porter Lake Dr. For info call 736-2324.

PANCAKE SUPPER
On Feb. 5, 5:30 - 7 p.m., Trinity United Methodist Church will host a pancake supper to celebrate Shrove Tuesday (Fat Tuesday/Mardi Gras). Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 782-9021 or 788-4607 at the cost of $3.50 for adults, $2.50 for children under 12. All tickets at the door will be $4. It is important to remember that this day is for confession and for celebration. It is in anticipation of the Lenten Season which starts the next day that we need to be ready for change and be ready to be changed. The chapel will be open for meditation and prayer before, during and following the supper.

PINE POINT COMMUNITY COUNCIL
The next meeting of the Pine Point Community Council will be Feb. 12 at 7 p.m. at 335 Berkshire Ave. An update on 1297 Bay St. will be provided. The meeting is open to all residents of Pine Point and residents are urged to attend to learn more about their neighborhood.

ROTARY SPEAKER
The Springfield Rotary Club announced that Atty. Kathleen A. Townsend, managing partner of The Divorce Mediation Group, will address the Springfield Rotary Club's luncheon meeting on Feb. 8. The subject of her talk will be Divorce Mediation: "The Civil Alternative." The Springfield Rotary Club meets every Friday at 12:15 p.m. in the MassMutual Room at The Basketball Hall of Fame, and is a proud member of Rotary International. The Rotary luncheon is $17 per person and is open to the public. WILBRAHAM
CONCERT AT UNITED CHURCH
A concert featuring music for organ, piano and violin will be Feb. 10 at 4 p.m. at Wilbraham United Church, 500 Main St. Performing will be Larry Schipull, Professor of Music at Mt. Holyoke College, on piano and organ; Grant Moss, Senior Lecturer in Music at Smith College, on piano and organ; and Linda Laderach, Professor of Music at Mt. Holyoke College, on violin. The scheduled program includes a four-hand piano piece and a piece for two organists at one organ, among others. All are welcome to attend. A free will offering will be collected.
