Out of the 20 samples taken two tested positive. No E. coli bacteria were detected in any of the samples. This is not an emergency. If it had been, residents would have been notified immediately. We believe that a combination of temporary conditions such as the water main replacement projects on Birch Road and Barclay Street contributed to the total coliform detections, when materials were dislodged from the pipes and chlorine residuals were reduced. The area affected was along the south side of town. We have flushed and retested the water in the affected area and no bacteria were found and further testing shows that this problem has been resolved. Some residents may smell and taste a trace of chlorine which is normal for others part of the distribution system. For more info., contact the Longmeadow Department of Public Works at 567-3400.
