BASIC RIGHTS WORKSHOP P.L.A.C.E. (Longmeadow's Special Education PAC), Hampden/Wilbraham SEPAC, and East Longmeadow SPED PAC are jointly sponsoring a free Basic Rights Workshop, presented by Julie Sinclaire of The Federation for Children with Special Needs, on Nov. 29 from 7 - 9 p.m. at Birchland Park Middle School, 50 Hanward Hill, East Longmeadow. This workshop is designed to help parents of children in special education better understand their rights and responsibilities and provides them with the information they need to become more effective decision makers and advocates for their child. Please preregister before Nov. 25 via email (no return response will be given) to: kphillips@eastlongmeadow.org to ensure adequate printed materials are available at the workshop.
WINTER CHEERLEADING The E.L. Rec. Dept. announces registrations for Winter Cheerleading are ongoing. Program will be held on Tues./Thurs., Jan. 3 - March 27 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at Birchland Middle School. Those presently in grades 2-7 are eligible, as well as the cheerleaders from the fall football program. Come into the Office, Mon. - Fri., 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. to register. Youth Wrestling The E.L. Rec. Dept. reminds parents that the Youth Wrestling program will begin on Nov. 27. Those in grades 2 - 8 are eligible to participate (grade 1 was listed incorrectly in the flyer). This program will run thru Feb. 14 on Tues./Thurs. from 6 - 7:30 p.m. Come into the Rec. Dept., Mon. - Fri., 8 a.m. - 4 p.m. to register.
Santa's Coming! Nov. 30 at 6 p.m. marks the annual Christmas Tree Lighting and arrival of Santa at the rotary. This event is sponsored by the E.L. Lions and the First Congregational Church. Santa will be transported to the church by the E.L. Fire Dept. and will meet each child who attends. ELHS band members will provide musical entertainment and refreshments will be available at the church.
BALLROOM DANCE LESSONS BEGIN A new eight-week session of Beginner/Intermediate Ballroom Dance lessons will begin at the Pleasant View Senior Center on Nov. 26 at 7 p.m. Dances taught will be the waltz and the samba. Please wear leather soled or felt bottom shoes no sneakers or rubber soles advised. Sign up in the Rec. Dept., 525-5437.
FLU CLINIC Our flu clinic has been scheduled for Nov. 27 from 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 N. Main St. on a walk-in basis. This year's vaccine will be given to E.L. seniors and residents with general health problems. Those who are allergic to eggs should not take the vaccine. The E.L. Senior Friendship Club will be having a bake sale during the clinic.
TAX EDUCATION SEMINAR H&R Block will be providing a free service to the community on Nov. 28 @ 10 a.m. at the Pleasant View Senior Center. You will get the latest information for managing your 2007 tax liability ... who needs to file a tax return, how much you can earn before your social security benefits are impacted, retirement plan considerations. Receive answers to your most pressing questions during this timely seminar.
HEALTH PLAN OPTIONS FOR PEOPLE WITH MEDICARE A presentation will be offered by Blue Cross & Blue Shield of MA on Nov. 28 @ 1:30 p.m. at the Pleasant View Senior Center. It will include an explanation of Medicare, including the new Medicare Part D drug benefit. It will also show how Medigap plans and Medicare Advantage plans work with Medicare. All are welcome regardless of insurance coverage. A question and answer session will follow.
CARING CONVERSATIONS A representative from All About You Professional Home Care will offer a part lecture, part discussion presentation entitled "Caring Conversations" on Dec. 12 @ 1 p.m. at the Pleasant View Senior Center, 328 North Main St. The goal is to help people learn how to talk to loved ones about difficult topics, such as giving up driving privileges, accepting help or treatment, etc. Free and open to the public.

HOME-BASED BUSINESS WORKSHOP The Agawam Small Business Assistance Center will hold Home-Based Business workshop on Nov. 27 at 6 p.m. at the Agawam Public Library on Cooper Street. This workshop addresses the laws regarding home-based businesses with specific information gleaned from communities throughout the area. This workshop is open to residents of the Pioneer Valley. The workshop will be conducted by Atty. Abbe McLane of Feeding Hills and will help you navigate your way through all the unexpected issues that confront any new business. This workshop will be held from 6 - 8 p.m. and refreshments will be served. Admission is free, but seating is limited so advance registrations are necessary. THANKSGIVING EVE SERVICE The Roman Catholic and Greek Orthodox communities of Greater Springfield will come together for an ecumenical Thanksgiving service to be held Nov. 21 at 7:30 p.m. at St. Michael's Cathedral, 28 State St., Springfield. A reception will immediately follow in the Bishop Marshall Center adjacent to St. Michael's Cathedral. All are welcome.
CANDLEPIN BOWLING Unified Sports Program is working with the Agawam Bowl on Walnut Street to offer kids ages three - 18 the opportunity to play candlepin bowling. The program will be free to all participants but a commitment will be needed to show up each week. If your child signs up and can not attend, a call will need to be made so we can get someone on the waiting list to step in. We have 10 lanes, which will allow us to have 30 participants plus another 10 "mentors" from our college and high school volunteers. The spots will be filled on a first come first serve basis with a goal of 15 children with special needs being involved. If interested, please go to the YMCA of Greater Westfield to sign up. LONGMEADOW "OUR LADY OF CHARITY" The Knights of Columbus #5406 of St. Mary's of Longmeadow will be hosting the icon of "Our Lady of Charity," the patroness of Cuba on Dec. 1 at 8 a.m. Father Francis Reilly, pastor of St. Mary's, will celebrate a special Right to Life Mass and will lead all in prayer to Our Lady of Charity. Devotion to the Virgin of Charity dates from the 1600s when three young men found the statue holding the Infant Jesus in Cuban Waters. Charity is one of the Knight's main principals, and they encourage all to attend this special mass.

CHRISTMAS ON THE GREEN First Church of Christ will hold its Annual Christmas Fair "Christmas.on the Green" on Dec. 1 from 9 a.m. - 3 p.m. First Church of Christ is located at the corner of Williams and Longmeadow Streets. "Christmas.on the Green" will feature live music, a visit from Santa from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m. and a holiday luncheon from 11 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Be sure to check out all the hand crafted items and home made treats. Teens and Tweens Wanted at Storrs Library The Youth Service Dept. of the Philip Michael Lauro II Discovery Room at the Storrs Library will hold a meeting on Dec. 7 from 3:30 - 4 p.m. for teens and tweens grade six through high school for T.A.G. our Teen Advisory Group. The Discovery Room is looking for youth volunteers to become a part of this group. Members of T.A.G. will become involved in the planning and implementing of programs for all ages. Your ideas and enthusiasm can help create programs, book discussions and displays for the Discovery Room and its customers. The group meets on a monthly basis. YOUTH WRESTLING, GRADES 5-8 This program is designed to introduce wrestling to athletes at the youth level. Focus will be on proper techniques, conditioning and fundamentals necessary to enjoy and be successful in the sport of wrestling. Participants will receive complimentary wrestling headgear. KARATE - SHOTOKAN STYLE Ages 16 and up. Shotokan Karate-Do International Federation (SKIF) system includes an international standardized syllabus of kihon (basics), kata (forms) and kumite (sparring). All instruction and certification is authentic and directly affiliated with SKIF Japan, one of the largest and finest karate organizations in the world. A white karate uniform is required for class and can be ordered through the instructor. Class is ongoing every two months for adults, but sign ups are welcome anytime. Christmas meeting The Wilbraham Garden Club will hold their special Christmas meeting Dec. 6. The meeting will be held at St. Cecilia's Parish Center. Refreshments will be served at noon. Holiday Sparkle will be presented by Linda Ladd and Elaine DiGovanni, winners of top awards in Horticulture and Floral Design as well as being Nationally Accredited Master Flower Show Judges. Six lovely creations will be awarded to lucky attendees. The guest fee for this event is $5.

Advent Service and Brunch The Women's Evening Fellowship and the Women's Guild of Wilbraham United Church will sponsor an Ecumenical Advent Service and brunch on Dec. 5 at 11 a.m. in the church sanctuary.
