A new expanded spray park at Springdale Park in Holyoke officially opened last week and the head of the Parks & Recreation Department, Teresa Shepard, told Reminder Publications they are "the way to go" over maintaining city pools.
Shepard explained a spray park conserves on water, which can never accumulate to avoid drowning hazards. The city has one pool left and Shepard said the costs are high to maintain it. During its season the staff alone costs between $700 and $800 a day.
The new spray park was built at a cost of $170,000 with $150,000 coming from Community Development Block Grant funds. The expansion doubled the size of the existing spray park at Springdale, one of the city's busiest parks, Shepard said.
The city is presently making plans to build a spray park for next summer at Pulaski Park.
