Store makes move toward future |

HOLYOKE -- For gently used furniture and household accessories at reasonable prices, St. Jude's Used Furniture and Furnishings can be a blessing for many in these tough economic times.
The well-established nonprofit, under the direction of Providence Ministries for the Need Inc. (PMN), recently moved its operations to 364 High St., according to Kathleen Bailes, development assistant, during an interview with Reminder Publications. Bailes, of Holyoke, also serves as store manager for St. Jude's.
On a recent early afternoon, shoppers were perusing the shop that was brightly adorned with holiday decorations. On any given day, customers can expect to find a variety of furniture including kitchen tables and chairs, china cabinets, sofas, chairs, bedroom sets, entertainment centers, end tables and hutches. In addition, an assortment of toasters, coffeemakers, blenders, dishes, and knick knacks are also tastefully displayed on wall shelves.
Bailes noted that tax-deductible donations are always welcome since she has a waiting list for items ranging from televisions and sleeper sofas to microwaves and small appliances.
St. Jude's is open weekdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. or by appointment by calling 536-9109. St. Jude's also features layaway options and delivery of larger items to the greater Holyoke area.
"Every purchase makes a difference," Bailes said, noting that all the money raised benefits the local community through PMN's programs including Kate's Kitchen, Kate's Bread Program and Margaret's Pantry.
Buying second hand is also a great opportunity for people to save money, keep items out of landfills, and to support charity, Bailes added.
Donations of small items may be dropped off during shop hours, however, Bailes requests that area residents having larger pieces should call first before donating merchandise.
Area residents interested in volunteering at the site may contact Bailes weekdays for more information.
Bailes is also available to speak to local church and civic organizations on the importance of having St. Jude's Used Furniture and Furnishings in the community.
