SPRINGFIELD — Springfield Fire Lt. Curt Marcellin's promotion to the rank of captain was announced at a press event on May 4 at Fire Department headquarters.

Marcellin, seen here with his wife Myra, is a Marine Corp veteran and is a graduate of Springfield Technical Community College and multiple certification courses from the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy.

The Springfield resident has been on the board of directors of the Caring Health Center and has been active in other civic efforts. He has been a Springfield firefighter since 1995.

As the first African-American to reach the rank of captain, Mayor Domenic Sarno described Marcellin as a "trailblazer."

He will be assigned to Engine 10 at the North Main Street Station.
