Church member's birthday inspired collection for needy |

HAMPDEN — Members of the Federated Community Church of Hampden wanted to do something special to celebrate the birthday of longtime church member, Peg Sterns.
After all, it isn't every day someone turns 100 years old.
So throughout the month of January, the church hosted a food drive in honor of Sterns, who was born on Jan 5, 1911, in Nova Scotia, Canada.
"Peg has been a member [of our church] for 34 years and has been in town for a good many years and now lives in the Life Care Center in Wilbraham," Frank Watson, church deacon, told Reminder Publications. "She went out to a restaurant for her birthday with family members and then came to church the next Sunday. She's quite a lady."
Watson added that for her birthday Sterns "just wanted people to donate, to help others."
The church collected about $1,000 in canned and dry foods according to Watson, which will be donated to the Rescue Mission in Springfield and the Survival Center in Indian Orchard.
The church also received $200 in cash donations, which Watson said would be used to purchase more food for the pantries, including low-sodium and sugar-free items, which will be donated to the special diets pantry at the Hampden Senior Center.
