Trampling down cancer one step at a time

WILBRAHAM The students of Minnechaug Regional High School and the Wilbraham & Monson Academy teamed up on a gorgeous spring afternoon last Thursday for a very important cause walking in an American Cancer Society Mini-Relay for Life.

Lasting 12 hours, the event was made up of teams of students. At least one member from each team had to be on the track at all times, showing that the fight against cancer is never ending.

Shannah Paddock, director of student services at the Academy, said work on the relay began in October.

"As a community, we need to take every step possible to end cancer and make this life a better one," Kayla Peloquin, chair of the event and a junior at the Academy, said. "Cancer affects everybody."

In addition to relay itself, there was a Cancer Survivor's Lap at 5:30 p.m. and a Luminaria Ceremony the lighting of 1,000 candles to honor survivors and those lost at 9 p.m.
