Sacco & Vanzetti Memorial

Aug. 23 will mark the 81st anniversary of the wrongful executions of Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts in 1927. To commemorate the date and to build opposition to the restoration of the death penalty in Massachusetts, the Hampden County Chapter of the Massachusetts Citizens Against the Death Penalty, in association with the Springfield Diocese Catholic Charities Agency, will be sponsoring a memorial service in Springfield in memory of the wrongful executions of Sacco and Vanzetti.
Because of schedule concerns the memorial service is scheduled for Aug. 21 from 5 - 7:30 p.m.
The event, which has been held annually since 1991, will also honor several individuals who have worked for the abolition of the death penalty. This year the group will present author Bruce Watson of Leverett as the main speaker. Watson's book on the Sacco and Vanzetti case, "Sacco and Vanzetti: The Men, The Murders, and The Judgment of Mankind" was a Book of the Month Club Selection and was nominated by the Mystery Writers Association of America for its prestigious Edgar Award.
State Rep. Angelo J. Puppolo of the 12th Hampden District will be honored for his record of public service.
The event will be hosted by the Bishop Marshall Center at St. Michael's Cathedral, which is located at the corner of State and Elliott Streets, Springfield. There will be free public parking available.
The public is invited to both attend and participate. Time is Aug. 21 from 5 - 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
