Setting the Military Stage
While the Kurdish region is extending their reach in Iraq and the Shia are holding onto Baghdad and Iraq’s southern oil rich portion, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is solidifying their claim in western Iraq and Syria.
Secretary of State John Kerry is talking to Iraq’s Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki about bolstering a more inclusive style government. Kerry understands that an all-inclusive government is not obtainable while ISIL is holding the Sunni population hostage in a political sense. Perhaps, Kerry’s strategy is to have Kurdistan and Baghdad open their territory to the moderate Sunnis in an attempt to isolate the radical elements.
In this manner, the U.S. could effectively conduct, which many already believe, another military offensive in Iraq and also spanning pars of Syria along the Jordanian border. Should a plan such as this materialize, then we might call it “mission Iraqi Freedom part three.”
