By now, most of us have heard of the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool & Spa Safety Act and its implication to pools, spas, and hot tubs across the country. At Minnechaug, the high school swimmers and the Falcon Swim Club (PVSL recreational team) were assured that our pool would be compliant by the Dec. 19 deadline.
Ed Cenedella, director of the district maintenance department, took the lead on this project back in early summer 2008. Ned Doyle, athletic director at Minnechaug, supported Cenedella consistently in his endeavor to achieve compliance and informed other MIAA teams of the federal requirements last fall. They teamed up with the Wilbraham Police Dive Team and installed new ASME/ANSI compliant drain covers on Dec. 17, two days before the deadline. The high school's pool was closed down for just one day and was one of the first in the area to be compliant.
The Hampden/Wilbraham swimmers and divers, who currently number over 200, are grateful to Cenedella for his many extra hours of hard work on this project. Cenedella researched this regulation and its requirements with people across the state to overcome the many obstacles in his way. As a result, we had a successful installation and were able to help other towns with information and sharing of the specialized tools needed.
The Minnechaug Swimming & Diving Team and the Falcon Swim Club would like to send a sincere thank you to Cenedella, Doyle and the Wilbraham Police Department for going the extra "lap" for our towns!
