Gov. Patrick needs to trim the budget, which could affect the adult community with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He proposed cutting transportation and day programs for these individuals, which would prove detrimental.
As a mother of a 30 year-old son with Down's syndrome, I know first hand how these programs enrich their lives with a sense of purpose and function. They offer intervention support and social skills, which include vocational and educational opportunities. Eliminating these programs would be a giant step backwards, when society has come so far with the understanding and acceptance of this population. Keeping them home to vegetate would be cruel, as opposed to giving them a chance to be functional on their developmental level, while at the same time, integrated into mainstream society. Danny has been attending one of these programs since 2003, and it has had a positive influence in his life socially, and vocationally.
Please help me in my venture to fight again this ridiculous proposal.
