Treat guns as we do cars

Jan. 16, 2013
Imagine getting your license as a teenager, having a background check, and then never having to deal with the Registry of Motor Vehicles again for the rest of your life. No renewals, no eye tests, no skill tests, and best of all no license or registration fees ever again.

Essentially, we need to treat guns the way we do cars. Cars and guns both can be lethal weapons in the hands of the wrong people. We are not going to be able to get rid of either however, so what's really needed for gun control is intelligent surveillance of those who own guns. Why doesn't one need to renew a gun registration? Why shouldn't gun owners like drivers help the deficit with fees for their second amendment right? It is ludicrous to think that getting a gun license once clears you forever. Mental health history and criminal background checks done even every five years would greatly reduce the number of troubled souls who slaughter innocents. Those who advocate gun rights would still be able to exercise that right without diminishing their status as law-abiding citizens. The license and registration fees should be commensurate with car rates at the very least.
