Vets need representation

Dec. 26, 2012
Speaking as a disabled vet, I question Longmeadow officials and the veterans themselves in their quest for a part-time veterans' agent in that town. People may not realize that these agents have to be extensively trained in all aspects of all classes and eras of military service.

Assisting all of these vets in their various claims and appeals far exceeds the constraints of a 30-hour week. It really is an around the clock job that requires house calls, telephone and computer work.

For these reasons, I strongly suggest a regional approach that combines resources and pairs a trained VA agent with an able assistant – along the lines of a paralegal – as the practical and most economical way to go about it.

I also suggest that vets contact the D.A.V., an independent organization that vociferously advocates for vets at the most effective and higher levels of claims adjudication.

Again, a town-by-town part-time approach to a problem that is sure to increase with the returning Middle East vets is not going to prove effective.
