We can’t accept this lack of service from National Grid

I sit here with my mag light in one hand and pen in another. Somehow that appears to be an odd combination. Oh yeah — we are having a power failure! We have been in the dark since 5:56 p.m. on Oct. 29. That is 60 hours as of right now and who knows how much longer. National Grid has an automated no comment line.

This is, I honestly forgot, how many outages in this this calendar year. Yes, “stuff” happens and Mother Nature sure has been cruel to us this year, but as residents of East Longmeadow are we going to accept the service (or lack of) that National Grid provides this town? Namely being “wired” last of the line? This is like the old Christmas lights back in the 1960s — when one goes out, they all go out. I remember that!

I listened to the talk show news on 560AM on Monday morning as one of our Selectmen was commenting on the number of letters that the Selectmen have written to National Grid. He “kind of laughed” at the nice responses that the town has received back. Really now, are we going to accept nice? What happened to accountability? We all pay a premium for our services and taxes. My property taxes just went up 6.21 percent. My salary has been frozen for two years.

I am asking the town officials to put out to us residents exactly what you need to what type of leverage the residents must apply to put this town into the year 2011 — soon to be 2012. Let’s get with some type of current times. How to we accept our entire town being totally in the dark?

On a more positive note, I must comment on the updates that the town has provided via our phones. Additionally, the care and compassion that many town employees were providing the community at Birchland School on Oct. 31. In the 28 years I have been a resident of this town, this is the first and best orchestrated total effort by all town departments to come together as one unit to take care of all of its citizens, young and old. Thank you. This is what we should always do.

It certainly was nice to get hot coffee, warm up, receive some much needed updates, and in short take care of one another.
