Well Water

The water and sewer program is still in limbo. Hal Haberman assigned Robin Crosbie to appoint a task force to set up rates and regulations for the new year. Robin appointed three Longmeadow citizens who just happen to have little knowledge about water and sewer. She neglected to name more experienced people like Ken Taylor and Curt Freedman who have years of water/sewer experience. In the May 29 edition of the Longmeadow News is a short article about water and sewer progress.

Although they have not completed their investigation, Larry Starr announced that they do not encourage people to put in wells. A decision made without the complete report. He (Starr) said he did not want to lose the revenue from the water sales and didn't seem to care about conservation. He said they need the money to pay for infrastructure maintenance.

When the ascending rate was announced, I asked William Scibelli why large users paid more per unit. He said large users put additional strain on the system and so cost more in maintenance. If that's the case then a large user with a well eliminates his contribution to the strain as his water no longer enters the system. Also, this plan would drastically reduce our reported water useage/home as this well water will replace town water for outside irrigation. The revenue lost would be made up by much lower maintenance costs and of course no purchase of water.

This is a win-win situation. As Starr said in his interview, "the rates themselves are not critical but the structure is critical."
