I understand the speculation about my position on a number of issues are unclear. This week I want to address the Longmeadow Adult Center.
At a recent Select Board meeting this point was made: "Do you know what they say about seniors? They're cheap to keep." This year's budget projections suggest that it will cost approximately $125,000 to operate the Longmeadow Adult Center with a portion of the Program Coordinator's salary being paid through FOLOCA. When the cost of operating an extremely vital community resource is around .24% of the overall $52,421,354 proposed town budget, funding it is a no-brainer.
The services the Adult Center provide to our aging population run the gamut from providing meals to helping our elders in crisis. The center provides recreation and the ability to socialize for people who many not have the opportunity to do so otherwise. For something that serves so many working with so little, it should be the commitment of the community to provide services to everyone, from children to seniors and everyone in between.
