The East of the River Five Town Chamber of Commerce (ERC5) represents member businesses in the communities of Hampden, East Longmeadow, Longmeadow, Ludlow, and Wilbraham committed to growing businesses and promoting economic development.
While the ERC5 generally opposes new taxes imposed on businesses and their employees, we are opposed to Ballot Question 3 to be voted on in the Nov. 2 state election. Question 3 calls for a reduction of the state sales tax from 6.25 percent to 3 percent, and would result in a reduction in state tax revenues of approximately $2.4 billion annually. Such a large reduction in revenue will result in many lost jobs, and seriously undermine any current legislative actions aimed at improving the state's economy.
While opposing this decrease in the state sales tax rate at this time, the ERC5 will continue to press for further reforms. The ERC5 will work to promote reforms in state and municipal employee pensions and health benefits, conservative use of capital gains revenue, and no expansion of the existing sales and use tax base.
Regardless of your position on these issues and the candidates for elected office, we urge you to exercise your democratic right and vote on Nov. 2.
Tammy Bordeaux
Chairwoman
ERC5
