June 9, 2005
Lt. Col. Lionel B. Urquhart delivered the following address:
Marines, Sailors and Soldiers,
We stand together this evening to honor the memory of five brothers-in-arms: Corporal Brad Squires, Lance Corporal Dustin Birch, Lance Corporal Daniel Chavez, Lance Corporal Thomas Keeling and Lance Corporal Devon Seymour, United States Marine Corps.
These five brave men died from an IED (Improvised Explosive Device) explosion on June 9, 2005 in the Al Anbar Province of Iraq while conducting a security mission. But as Samuel Johnson said, "It matters not how a man dies, but how he lives. The act of dying is not of importance, it lasts so short a time." These five Americans are heroes because they believed there are things worthy risking one's life to achieve. They realized freedom comes at a price. Keeping our family, friends and way of life safe requires someone to have the courage to face their fears and do the difficult.
As we listened to the heartfelt eulogies from friends of these fallen American heroes we learned that each man was unique. Each man was an individual, yet at the same time each man shared the same traits of loyalty, integrity, dedication, courage and selflessness. These are noble traits and it is appropriate that we honor men who willingly put the needs of others before their own.
Men of Task Force 3/25: Let us remember that the sincerest way to honor a fallen warrior is to accomplish the mission. We must continue to protect the innocent and eliminate the terrorists, because when all is said and done, our actions will be our most enduring memorial to these noble men.
Corporal Squires, Lance Corporal Birch, Lance Corporal Chavez, Lance Corporal Keeling and Lance Corporal Seymour:
May they rest in peace; may God bring comfort to those who mourn them; and may they never be forgotten.
Semper Fidelis.
