Watching Them Run

You hear the thunder, you feel it beneath your feet

As you stand so still on an ocean of swaying grass

You see, so distant, a diversity of colors coming your

Way, dust swirling behind them.

The thunder gets louder, now drumming rhythmically

Through your body,

The colors turn into bodies, coats that carry sheen

like a blade

Now you see tossing heads and tails erect, held up

Proudly like a flag, a flag of freedom

A fury of hooves carries them across the sea of

Green, you wonder if they're flying

You see eyes rimmed in white, eyes that have seen

The snow on mountaintops, so many sunsets, and

Countless stars

They come closer, they do not slow down

But there's a force that makes you still, will not let

You move, makes you hold your breath, do not blink

Or you will miss it,

As they flash past you, all at once,

A moment of hard breathing and crashing hooves,

Then you turn,

To watch them gallop away into the setting sun, as if

You were never in their way.
