Six recognized as 2009 Women of Distinction

By Lori Szepelak

Correspondent

Six women from throughout the region were recognized Feb. 25 as the 2009 Women of Distinction by the Girl Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts.

The public reception at Bay Path College gave each nominee a chance to meet each other and the teen Girl Scout Gold Award recipients who will introduce them at a March 12 dinner event.

The Women of Distinction award recipients are Shirley Edgerton of Pittsfield, Department of Mental Retardation; Judy Gallant-Root of Worcester, Family Health Center of Worcester; Sarah Perez McAdoo, M.D., MPH, of Springfield, Baystate Medical Center; Linda Randall of Springfield, Springfield Technical Community College; Cheryl Rumley of Springfield, Apex Healthcare Services; and Brenda Seaver of Worcester, Massachusetts Court System.

The Girl Scouts have been honoring local women annually who are outstanding in their fields or endeavors, who have no fear of tackling difficult issues and who act as important role models for youth, especially girls, according to Dana Carnegie, communications manager, Girl Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts.

Local women are nominated and final selection is made by individuals representing business and civic organizations. This year, each woman was considered for her ability to achieve beyond the challenge, Carnegie noted.

Tickets to the March 12 evening gala at the Log Cabin in Holyoke are $55. Former Massachusetts Gov. Jane Swift will serve as honorary chair for the event, and Abbe Hamilton of South Hadley, the 2008 Girl Scout National Young Woman of Distinction, will speak about her national honor.

For tickets or more information, contact Angelika Melien, director of fund development for Girl Scouts of Central and Western Massachusetts, at 525-4124 ext. 29 or via e-mail at amelien@gscwm.org. All the funds raised support Girl Scouts teen leadership programs.

The Women of Distinction event is sponsored in part by Health New England and Baystate Health, as well as corporate sponsors St. Germain Investment Management, ABC Bakers, Ashton Farms and WARE Radio/Real Oldies 1250.
