Annual Jimmy Fund golf tournament/Jeffrey Vinick memorial set for June 14 at three courses

GREATER SPRINGFIELD The 2010 Jimmy Fund golf tournament/Jeffrey Vinick memorial will take place June 14, at four area courses: Crestview Country Club in Agawam; The Ranch Golf Club in Southwick; Ellington Ridge Country Club in Ellington, Conn.; and Wintonbury Hills Golf Course in Bloomfield, Conn.

The tournament is hosted annually in memory of Jeffery Vinick, an 18-year-old, three-sport varsity athlete who, 28 years ago, lost his life to cancer. Vinick lived in Longmeadow and excelled at soccer, basketball and baseball. He graduated from Longmeadow High School in 1981 and attended Springfield College for a few months before he passed away in March of 1982. A year later, the Western Mass. event was renamed in his honor.

The tourney is organized by a committee, made up of more than 50 local volunteers including members of the Jimmy Fund Council of Western Mass. This year's goal is to raise $475,000 for cancer care and research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute through the Jimmy Fund.

Tee times for the scramble format tournament are: 9:30 a.m. at Ellington Ridge and Wintonbury Hills and 10 a.m. at Crestview and The Ranch. The day kicks off with a continental breakfast at 8:30 a.m. at each course. A catered lunch is served on each course, and the day's festivities are capped off with a celebration dinner at Chez Josef, in Agawam.

If you are unable to attend the golf tournament, you can still support the Jimmy Fund by purchasing tickets for the dinner, which are available for $80 per person. The cocktail reception will begin at 4:30 p.m., with dinner served at 6 p.m. The night will also include featured speakers, live and silent auctions, and an opportunity drawing.

Drawing prizes include four seats on third base line to the Boston Red Sox versus Cleveland Indians Game on Aug. 2, a Dick's Sporting Goods prize pack, including a $50 gift certificate, and 12 free car washes at Golden Nozzle and a $50 Starbucks prize pack.

Items for the live and silent auction include New England Patriots tickets, Red Sox Luxury Box, autographed sports memorabilia from current and former professional athletes, a gift certificate to Teddy Bear Pools and Spa, an Arizona golf getaway for two, a golf package for four at The International, a $2,000 shopping spree at Elle Jewelers, and a romantic getaway at the Essex Resort & Spa in Vermont.

Lisa Scherber, a child life specialist at the Jimmy Fund Clinic, who is more familiarly known as "The Play Lady" and Dan Pardi, a cancer survivor, are scheduled to speak at the dinner.

Openings are still available for players, sponsorships, donations, auction items and volunteers. Dinner reservations are still being accepted from golfers and non-golfers who wish to participate in this prestigious event.
