SPRINGFIELD The Springfield Armor announced recently that they have acquired forward Eugene Spates from the Maine Red Claws in exchange for Vernon Goodridge.
Spates (6-foot-7, 220 pounds) was drafted in the seventh round of the 2010 NBA D-League Draft after playing for BC Mess in Luxembourg, Europe.
With Maine, Spates was the only player on the roster to appear in all 35 games, starting five. Spates has averaged 6.2 points and 3.5 rebounds in 16.3 minutes per game and has scored in double figures nine times during the 2010-11 season. Spates exploded for a season-high 21 points in a Dec. 30 victory over the Erie Bayhawks.
Spates, a native of Dallas, Texas, began his collegiate career at Dallas Collin County Community College and transferred to Northeastern. While at Northeastern, Spates averaged 7.5 points per game in 95 games played.
"We are excited to add Eugene to our roster," Armor head coach Dee Brown said. "[Spates] is a great locker room guy and gives us flexibility at the four and five positions because of his ability to score and shoot the basketball."
Goodridge, whom the Armor traded to the Red Claws, played in 33 games for the Armor this season, starting 28. He averaged 9.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.6 blocks in 23.2 minutes per game.
"We appreciate the contributions Vernon brought to the team during the first half of the season," Brown said. " Spates will be in action with the Armor for the first time when the team returns Feb. 22 at 7 p.m. in Fort Wayne, Texas against the Mad Ants. View the game at nba.com/futurecast.
