Berkshire East to host 'Hope on the Slopes'

CHARLEMONT — The American Cancer Society is launching a Hope on the Slopes event for the first time ever in Massachusetts at Berkshire East Ski Resort. This down hill skiing and snowboarding event gives everyone in our region a chance to help the organization save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

Hope on the Slopes will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 13 at Berkshire East. Ski Resort. Participants have the choice to be part of a team, participate as an individual and/or compete in a vertical challenge. There are no age restrictions on event participants. Former and current cancer patients, those who have lost a loved one to cancer, families, businesses, faith-based and civic organizations, and anyone wanting to make a difference in the fight against cancer are invited to take part in this exciting event.

Prior to the event, individual and team participants register online and fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Each participant and team will receive a personal web page that they can customize with their own messages and photos. Features of the site include the ability to easily fundraiser online via email, track fundraising progress, and honor loved ones touched by cancer. Registration fees that help cover costs of the event are $35 per individual. In addition, each participant is asked to raise a minimum of $100.

Hope on the Slopes began in Washington State eight years ago and today there are only seven of these niche events in the United States. The goal for teams is an endurance one of keeping at least one team member on the mountain trails at all times throughout the six hours. Teams do most of their fundraising prior to the event, and are asked to pay a $35 registration fee per person.

Hope on the Slopes brings together friends, families, businesses, hospitals, schools, faith-based groups and people from all walks of life — all aimed at furthering the American Cancer Society's efforts to save lives by helping people stay well, by helping them get well, by finding cures and by fighting back.
