Berthiaume twice named an All-Star |

SPRINGFIELD The Springfield College (SC) men's basketball team received a double shot in the arm last week as junior guard Alex Berthiaume of Springfield was named a First Team All-Northeast All-Star by both the National Association of Basketball Coaches and D3Hoops.com.
Berthiaume had earlier been named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Player of the Year.
In addition, Berthiaume had been named New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) First Team All-Conference two weeks ago.
Berthiaume had a great year in leading the Pride to a berth in the finals of the NEWMAC post-season conference tournament. SC lost by five to an MIT team, which this weekend will be competing in the NCAA Division III Final Four.
He led the entire NEWMAC in scoring average (19.2 ppg) and total points in the regular season (519). He also ranked second in the league in steals (43) and third in assists (92). He scored 20 points or more a total of 14 times in 27 games, and reached the 30-point plateau three times. He also topped the league in average minutes per game (34.8).
Central wins state crown
WORCESTER Central High School's Cornelius Tyson scored 16 points, while Tyrell Springer netted 14 as the Golden Eagles topped Brockton 67-46 to win the Division I boys basketball state championship on March 17.
Central led by three points at halftime, but outscored Brockton 47-19 in the second half, including 25-9 in the fourth quarter.
Kamari Robinson also had 12 points in the effort.
Holyoke falls in championship
WORCESTER Monique Heard scored 17 points, but the Holyoke High School girls basketball team fell to undefeated Andover 61-45 in the Division I girls basketball state championship on March 17.
Sabis topped in DIII final
WORCESTER The Sabis International Charter School girls basketball team fell to Pentucket 55-32 in the Division III girls basketball state championship on March 17. Shyanne Wellington and Jazmine Collins scored 10 points apiece for the Bulldogs.
Hine wins St. Patrick's 10K
HOLYOKE South Hadley's Zachary Hine took first place overall in the 37th St. Patrick's Road Race on March 17 with a time of 29:37.4.
Witaszek named NECC
Player of the Week
CHICOPEE Ally Witaszek of Feeding Hills, first baseman for the Elms College softball team, was named NECC Player of the Week as announced by the league on March 12 after she hit .667 in three of Elms' first four games this season.
