Blair, Gaines garner MASCAC baseball accolades

BUZZARDS BAY — Josh Blair, a senior outfielder for the Westfield State University (WSU) baseball team, was named Massachusetts State College Athletic Association (MASCAC) Baseball Co-Player of the Week on April 29.

The Westfield native batted .526 (10-for-19) with six doubles, homer, seven RBIs and seven runs scored in a 5-1 week for the Owls, including four hits and four runs in a twinbill sweep at Fitchburg State to go with three hits and three RBIs in a doubleheader sweep of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA).

MCLA pitcher and Holyoke native Daniel Gaines was also tabbed as MASCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week after he hurled a pair of complete games in 3-3 week for Trailblazers. He allowed one earned run and fanned five in 3-2 victory over Framingham State.

Madera wins 100 meters

BUZZARDS BAY — Southwick's Zack Madera, a sophomore at WSU, captured the crown in the 100 meters (11.02) for the Owls at 2012 MASCAC Championships, earning him a spot on the MASCAC men's outdoor track and field weekly honor roll.

Asselin, Clark earn NE-10 honors

SOUTH EASTON — Sophomores Dan Asselin of Chicopee and Dave Clark of West Springfield were named to the Northeast-10 baseball honor roll for their respective performances for the American International College (AIC) baseball team.

Asselin batted .389 (7-for-18) with four runs scored and had a .500 on-base percentage last week. He went 3-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored in a win at Merrimack and was 1-for-3 with two runs scored against Assumption.

Clark batted .391 (9-for-23) with three doubles, one triple, three RBI and six runs scored last week. He went 2-for-5 with two RBI and three runs scored in the win over the Warriors and was 3-for-5 with one double, one triple, one RBI and two runs scored against Assumption.

Clark went 2-for-4 with a double in the first of three games at Adelphi.

AIC takes second at Springfield College Invitational

SPRINGFIELD — Sophomore Jenna Miller of Chicopee won the long jump with a leap of 5.25 meters as the AIC women's track and field team finished second of the nine schools competing at the Springfield College Invitational on April 23.

Junior Sanya Foster of Springfield won the shot put with a toss of 13.26 meters and won the discus with a throw of 37.41 meters, and took third in the hammer with a throw of 41.66 meters.

Foster earned Northeast-10 honor roll recognition for her performance.

Burnette cruises in victory

HOLYOKE — Elms College junior right-handed starter Ryan Burnette of Chicopee scattered four hits and struck out 11 batters to help spark the Blazers baseball team to an 8-2 victory over Lesley University on April 24.

Joseph Santos of Springfield pitched two scoreless innings of relief for Lesley.

Dussault, Hill key to win

WESTFIELD — Junior catcher Brittany Dussault of Chicopee was 2-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBI and freshman third baseman Vicki Hill of West Springfield was 3-for-5 with three runs scored in the nightcap of the WSU softball team's sweep of MCLA on April 24.

Narey pots hat trick

WORCESTER — Elms College sophomore midfielder Kayla Narey of South Hadley, scored a team-high three goals, but the Blazers women's lacrosse team fell to Worcester State 16-5 on April 25.

Ogden key to Bay Path victory

LONGMEADOW — Springfield's Nicole Ogden doubled in two runs in game one of a doubleheader sweep for the Bay Path College softball team over Elms College.

Elms shortstop Amanda Alvarado of Springfield had two hits and scored a run in the nightcap and finished the two games with three hits. South Hadley's Leah Spring also had an RBI single in game two for the Elms.

Elms sweeps Regis

CHICOPEE — Elms College junior second baseman Ali Bonavita of Agawam was a combined 5 for 6 at the plate with three RBIs and two runs scored and senior pitcher Courtney Hampton of Westfield recorded a pair of wins in the circle to help propel the Blazers to a double-header sweep of Regis College on April 28.
