Cerpovicz named to NFHCA All-Academic team

WILBRAHAM – West Springfield's Allie Cerpovicz was one of three Wilbraham & Monson Academy field hockey players to be selected to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Academic Team.

In order to be nominated a player must have a unweighted GPA of 3.5 (4.0 scale) or better in the first marking period.

Cerpovicz will play field hockey and attend St. Lawrence University.

Deslisle named to MASCAC honor roll

BUZZARDS BAY – Chicopee's Zack Deslisle, a freshman member of the Westfield State University (WSU) men's track and field team, earned a spot on the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference honor roll after he took top honors in the pole vault (4.31 meters) for the Owls at the Springfield Invitational.

Elms softball swept by Lesley

CAMBRIDGE – Senior third baseman Rachel Butt of Agawam and junior first baseman Ally Witaszek of Feeding Hills had two hits each, including an RBI single by Butt, but the Elms College softball team was swept by Lesley University by scores of 8-5 and 9-0 on April 21.

Chicopee's Asselin and Fenton help AIC

SPRINGFIELD – The American International College (AIC) baseball team got RBI singles from junior left fielder Dan Asselin and junior catcher Dan Fenton, both of Chicopee, to help spark an offensive outburst by the Yellow Jackets in the rubber match of a three game weekend set against Adelphi, which AIC won by a score of 11-1.

Asselin finished the day 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI, while Fenton was 2-for-4 with an RBI. West Springfield's Dave Clark was 4-for-5 with two stolen bases and three runs scored.

Grassetti chips in as Worcester State tops Mass. Maritime

WORCESTER – The Worcester State University women's lacrosse team received two helpers off the stick of sophomore Angela Grassetti of Feeding Hills in a 17-2 win over Massachusetts Maritime Academy on April 20.

Elms baseball sweeps Southern Vermont College

HOLYOKE – Springfield's Thomas Weldon pitched 5.0 innings and allowed one unearned run on two hits and struck out two, but didn't factor into the decision in the Elms College baseball team's 2-1 game one win in a doubleheader sweep of Southern Vermont College on April 20.

In a 4-1 win in game 2, junior third baseman Sam Farnsworth of Westfield doubled to center field o knock in a run.

Farnsworth also had an RBI double in a game one loss during a doubleheaders split with Becker College on April 18.

AIC lacrosse falls to No. 9 St. Michael's

COLCHESTER, Vt. – Sophomore Bobby Spano was the only Yellow Jacket player with a multi-goal game, scoring two goals in the contest and fellow West Springfield native Kyle Brodeur netted a goal, but ninth-ranked Saint Michael's College outscored the AIC men's lacrosse team 5-1 in the third quarter as the Yellow Jackets fell 10-6 on April 20.

McDonough's hat trick not enough for Elms lacrosse

WESTON – Elms College sophomore attacker Nora McDonough of South Hadley scored three goals and sophomore attacker Lauren Mazza of Agawam scored twice but nine different Regis College players scored to deal the Blazers a 21-5 loss in women's lacrosse on April 20.

Dowe takes third in long jump

SPRINGFIELD – WSU senior Karen Dowe was third in the long jump with a leap of 17-3/4 as the Owls' women's track and field team finished third overall at the Springfield Invitational on April 20.

Bay Path softball sweeps Elms

CHICOPEE – Elms College sophomore pitcher Jessica Colson of Agawam fanned 11 batters and allowed just two hits in game one and freshman hurler Jamie Miner of Chicopee allowed two hits and struck out three batters in game two but Bay Path College earned a pair of extra-inning victories over the Blazers on April 20.

Springfield's Nicole Ogden delivered an RBI single for an insurance run in the eighth inning of game one for Bay Path.

South Hadley's Leah Spring went a combined 6-for-8, including a double and a triple with three RBI.

Miele, WSU golf open 2013 season

SPRINGFIELD – South Hadley's Chris Miele shot an 85 as the WSU men's golf team finished ninth in the Western New England University Invitational to open its 2013 spring season.
