AGAWAM For gymnasts who compete in USA Gymnastics, qualifying to the Junior Olympic (J.O.) National Championships is the ultimate goal for Level 9/10 men and Level 10 women. There are eight regions represented at J.O. Nationals, and Massachusetts is part of Region VI. Athletes qualify to the national level from regional championship meets across the nation.

This year, Daggett Gymnastics is sending all 14 of their athletes who compete at these highest levels. This is the highest number of national qualifiers for men and women combined of any club in New England.
Headed for their respective national championships are (front row, left to right) Luke Aldrich, Kameron Tang, Peter Daggett, Ben Provost. (middle row) Abby Griswold, Karen Tang, Kathy Tang. (back row) Paul Wood, Josh Ungar, Jon Deaton.

For the men's program, the New England 9/10 Regionals took place in Middlebury, Conn., April 9 through 11. At the Level 9 (age 12 to 13) meet, Peter Daggett from East Longmeadow placed second all-around. Kameron Tang from Agawam, Luke Aldrich from Amherst and Ben Provost from South Hadley also qualified to the national meet that day. Longmeadow's Jon Deaton, age 15, and Josh Ungar, age 16, both won the all-around for their Level 10 age division, while Paul Wood, age 17 from Hardwick, took fourth. Connecticut gymnasts Shaun Herzog, Danny DiBenedetto and Devin Clarke also qualified. All 10 will now head to Knoxville, Tenn., May 5 through 9, to compete among the country's best gymnasts.

In the women's program, Region VI is comprised of not only the six New England states, but the very large state of New York. Top-ranked gymnasts from these states competed at the Level 10 Region VI Championships in Danvers, Mass., April 9 and 10, where Abby Griswold, age 15 from Monson, and Agawam sisters Kathy, age 16, and Karen Tang, age 17, all finished in the top eight and qualified to Nationals, slated for May 6 through 9, in Dallas, Texas.

These girls are the only gymnasts in Western Massachusetts who compete at Level 10, just one tier below international elite (the Olympic level). Lauren Ross, age 16, from South Windsor, Conn., also qualified.
