DiFranco wins Amo 'Betts' Bessone Award

Kyle DiFranco
Senior hockey captain Kyle DiFranco of East Longmeadow High School has been named the winner of the Amo "Betts" Bessone Award as the outstanding high school hockey player in Western Massachusetts for the 2008-09 season, as voted by the coaches, on-ice officials and members of the Bessone committee.

A three-time All Scholastic, Coaches All Division Team pick and two-time Super 7 selection, DiFranco led the Berry Division in scoring for the past three seasons. He set a school record of 66 points in 2008-09, after getting 38 points as a junior and 39 as a sophomore. His 166 career points (85 goals and 81 assists) are a school record for the Berry Division. He scored in 21 of 22 games this past season, recording four hat tricks and was assessed only one (matching) penalty during the year. He led the Spartans to two Western Mass Championship games and two semi-final berths as a four-year starter.

Other nominees for this season's Bessone award included fellow teammate Vincenzo Spagnuolo of East Longmeadow, Patrick Lenihan of Holyoke High School and Dan Fenton and Keith MacDonald of Cathedral High School.

DiFranco was selected by Channel 22, Channel 40 and then the Republican as Athlete of the Week during the hockey season. He was also named first team all scholastic and captain of the high school's golf and baseball teams. DiFranco will be attending Springfield College and looking forward to playing baseball in the fall.
