East Longmeadow girls cross country off to best start since 2007

CHICOPEE – The East Longmeadow High School girls cross country team took seven of the top 11 places at a quad meet at Chicopee State Park on Sept. 25, defeating Chicopee, Chicopee Comprehensive, and Minnechaug high schools.

With a 4-1 record, the Lady Spartans are off to their best start since 2007.

Meredith McGowan led the way for East Longmeadow with a time of 22:35, good for first place. Abigail Laughlin (24:17), Victoria Evans (24:20) and Sarah Venn (24:29) finished fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

Abigail Rate (25:09), Nina Pham (25:15) and Chelsea Bernard (25:28) also finished in a cluster, taking ninth, 10th and 11th.

Esther Lee was the first Minnechaug finisher, crossing the finish in 25:01, good for eighth place. Rachel Silk (25:37) finished 12th for the Falcons.

Minnechaug football suffers first loss to West Springfield

WILBRAHAM – Despite two rushing touchdowns from Ben Sheehan, the Minnechaug football team lost its first game of the season to West Springfield 28-14 on Sept. 27.

Sheehan rushed 16 times for 87 yards an the Falcon’s only two scores of the game.

Quarterback Anthony Roughgarden, filling in for injured starter Kyle Trombley, completed 14 of 25 passes for 155 yards, but was intercepted twice.

Josh Henry led all receivers with four catches for 80 yards, while Dan Naumec added three receptions for 47 yards.

The Falcons host undefeated Westfield in a pivotal AA Conference showdown on Oct. 4.

ELHS freshmen/JV2 girls soccer blast all opponents

EAST LONGMEADOW – If three most recent games are any indication, the future of girls soccer is bright for East Longmeadow High School.

In its last three games, the East Longmeadow girls freshmen/JV2 soccer team impressed with dominating wins against Northampton and Chicopee Comp and Agawam outscoring their opponents by a combined margin of 19-1.

On Sept. 19, welcomed Blue Devils to town with an unrelenting assault that resulted in a 7-0 blowout.

Logan Bono led the scoring with a hat trick, including an unassisted corner kick goal.

In addition to Bono’s three goals, Danielle Robitaille scored twice while Sabrina Gonyea netted a goal and an assist and Samantha Cutler and potted a goal.

Reilly, Amanda Hill, Cara Cohn also registered assists.

On Sept. 23, Chicopee Comp struck first when they scored early on an unassisted corner kick, but the Spartans came roaring back to take the game 7-1.

Robitaille scored a shocking five goals on the day, including the game-tying goal.

Bono and Carley Piemonte each finished the game with a goal and an assist. Dennery Griffin had two assists while Jamie Reuling added a helper.

Robitaille followed up that performance with a hat trick, plus an assist, in a 5-0 win over Agawam on Sept. 28.

Jillian O’Toole scored a goal and made an assist and Bono rounded out the scoring.

Hill, Cutler and Lauren Gauvine each registered assists.
