EAST LONGMEADOW The East Longmeadow High School Athletic Hall of Fame held its third annual golf tournament at the Elmcrest Country Club on Somersville Road on May 21.
The tournament is the associations major fund raiser. This year's tournament hosted 24 foursomes in a "scramble" starting with a barbecue lunch, and followed by a buffet style dinner afterward.
Many prizes were donated and subsequently raffled off during dinner, including four tickets to a Red Sox game. All proceeds are used to help offset the cost of the annual induction ceremony held in November of each year, except for the money raised by the Red Sox tickets, that money is used to provide scholarships to East Longmeadow Recreation Department summer sports clinics for the youth of the town.
The winners of this years tournament were: First place with a round of 60 John Courtney, Matt Fontaine, Jack Blanchard and Steve Alumnas; second place with a score of 61 Greg Frigs, Jim Ford, Dino Manicotti and Matt Trudeau. third place, also with a 61 Matt Keshena, Steve Grande, Mark Decker and Ron Cutler.
Pat Bean had her first ever hole-in-one on the 168 yard par 3 fourth hole, and was the winner of a pool donated by Teddy Bear Pools of Chicopee. Her drive was witnessed as coming off the tee in a classic arc, landing about 15 feet from the green and rolling up a slight slope and dropping into the cup with cheer heard all over the golf course.
Other prizes awarded include: men's longest drive Kyle Bosquet, women's longest drive Trish Hamey; closest to the pin on four holes Pat Bean, Mike Grossi, Bill Scott and Fran Ryan.
A putting contest using severely damaged golf balls was won by Kyle Bosquet and Joe Miller, both of whom sunk the putt from about 30 feet.
The Hall of Fame is entering its third year and has already inducted nearly fifty athletes, coaches and/or contributors. This years induction ceremony will be held on Nov. 17 at the Elmhurst Country Club and will induct another 20 or so candidates.
