SPRINGFIELD The Springfield Falcons announced recently that Senior Vice President Bob Oliver will be participating in the first ever "Bob's Ride for Five" on July 18 outside the MassMutual Center.
In an effort to raise funds for the Jimmy Fund and Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, Oliver will ride a stationary bike for the entire workday outside the MassMutual Center, at the corner of Main Street and Falcons Way, beginning at 9 a.m. and ending at 5 p.m.
This workday endeavor will also assist Oliver in his preparation for his first PanMass Challenge later this summer.
The 2012 PanMass Challenge will be a 240-mile bicycle ride for Oliver that begins at his home in Suffield, Conn., on Aug. 3, where he will bike to the official starting point in Sturbridge, Mass.
Then, from there, it's another two days to Provincetown starting Aug. 4 and ending Aug. 5.
"Cancer affected my family through the recent passing of my father-in-law in February. I felt helpless. I wanted to do more and I needed to do more, and through my love of cycling, was able to learn about the PanMass Challenge and all the wonderful work that the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston does. They do amazing work on behalf of cancer research and care and I'm honored to be able to help," Oliver said.
The goal of "Bob's Ride for Five" is to raise $5,000 for the cause. Any individuals or companies interested in donating may make a donation on or before July 18, or can visit Oliver's Fund-raising page through the PanMass Challenge website, which is located at www.pmc.org/profile/RO0048.
