SPRINGFIELD The Springfield Falcons split a home-and-home weekend series against the Providence Bruins on Dec. 11 and 12.
On Dec. 11, the Falcons suffered a heartbreaking loss, falling 3-2 in front of 3,566 at the MassMutual Center. The Falcons led for the majority of the night, but Providence battled back with three third period goals, including the game-winner with three seconds remaining in regulation. The two teams meet again on Sunday in Providence.
With the Falcons leading 2-0 midway through the third period, Providence's rally started at 11:07 of the final period when Matt Bartkowski tallied his third goal of the year cutting the Bruins deficit to 2-1. Providence continued to look for the equalizer and in a strange sequence of events, Jeff Penner netted the equalizer at the 12:00 mark of the final period. Penner's goal came at the end of play that saw Falcons defenseman Grant Clitsome take a high stick to the face in the right wing corner with no penalty attached to the play.
With the game now deadlocked at 2-2, Providence ended up on a late power play and with just three seconds remaining in regulation, Maxime Sauve's shot found the back of the net giving the Bruins a 3-2 advantage.
The next night, the Falcons got back on the winning track on Sunday afternoon beating the Providence Bruins 4-1 at the Dunkin Donuts Center. Matt Calvert scored a pair of goals for the Falcons, while goaltender David LeNeveu stopped 35 of 36 shots on goal.
For the second straight night, the Falcons built a lead on Providence as defenseman Cody Goloubef opened the scoring with a power play goal at 5:25 into the first period assisted by David Savard and Nikita Filatov.
The Falcons carried a 1-0 lead into the second period, but Providence tied the score at 2:05 of the middle period when Jamie Arniel scored his team-leading 11th marker of the year. Springfield regained their advantage at 9:45 of the second period when Calvert scored his 12th goal of the year, followed by Mike Ratchuk netting his first goal of the season at 16:28 of the middle frame expanding the Falcons lead to 3-1 after 40 minutes of play.
Calvert added his 13th goal of the season in the third period ending the scoring for the night.
