First ever Wheelchair Softball game hosted at Cathedral |
|
SPRINGFIELD On May 8, the members of the Cathedral High School varsity softball team took on the Wild Wheels in the first annual Wheelchair Softball Game.
The event took place in the gymnasium of Cathedral High School complete with raffle prizes and concessions. The event marked the first time that both softball teams were brought together for this type of competition. The Wild Wheels team was brought together by Nancy Bazanchuk, director of CHD disability resource program. This program is founded on the beliefs that individuals with physical disabilities and visual impairments enhance their self-confidence, interactive skills and physical abilities through organized activities, support groups and self-advocacy.
The softball team from Cathedral welcomed their guests and began the event with a short clinic on hitting, throwing, and catching.
There was great interaction between both groups and helpful parents worked with both teams on becoming more accustomed to wheelchair softball.
The event also raised $160 for each group.
