Fontaine helps WNE become top D-III program in New England

BREWSTER – Matthew Fontaine of East Longmeadow finished tied for 100th with a two-day score of 164 (80, 84) as the WNE golf team ranked first among NCAA Division III programs and was fourth overall at the 79th annual New England Intercollegiate Golf Association Championships, which concluded on Oct. 28.

Tyler Cudnik of Hampden tied for 81st with a 162 (82, 80) for Elms College, which placed 14th overall.

Springfield College, who placed 35th, was led by Kyle DiFranco of East Longmeadow, who followed up his first round 81 with a 77 on Monday to finish tied for 45th.

Elms women’s cross country places second at NECCs

WESTFIELD – The Elms College women’s cross country team raced to a second place finish at the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) Championship cross country races hosted by Bay Path College at Stanley Park on Oct. 26.

Junior Emily Taylor of Ludlow (26:00) was among those who completed the 5K course for the Blazers.

Goodchild named NECC Player of the Week

CHICOPEE – Ludlow natives Ashley Venancio and Jillian Pirog each netted goals as the Elms College women’s soccer team earned an 11-0 victory over Wheelock College on Oct. 26.

Venancio also had an assist and Christina Goodchild of East Longmeadow added a helper of her own.

Elms fired a whopping 44 shots, including 34 on net, to Wheelock’s three.

Goodchild also scored when she intercepted a goal kick and fired a shot from 25 yards out into the far corner to give Elms a 5-0 win over Becker College on Oct. 29.

Bartnik scores as WNE sews up No. 2 seed

SPRINGFIELD – East Longmeadow’s Jake Bartnik netted his team-leading ninth goal in the 15th minute to give the Golden Bears the offense they would need as the Western New England University men’s soccer team topped Roger Williams 3-0 on Oct. 29 to clinch the No. 2 seed in the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Tournament that starts this weekend.

Greco, Phillips lead Springfield College past Holy Cross

WORCESTER – Christiana Greco of Wilbraham was part of a 400-meter medley relay that took first with a time of 4:07.19 and individually, won the 100 butterfly in 59.25 as the Springfield College women’s swimming and diving team opened the season with a win on Oct. 26, taking down Holy Cross, 171-124.

Callie Phillips of East Longmeadow won the 200 freestyle (2:00.80).

Vital nets game-tying goal in Pride’s 1-1 draw with WPI

WORCESTER – Nina Vital of Ludlow netted the Springfield College women’s soccer team’s lone goal, her third of the season, to tie the game 1-1 and the Pride settled for that score after two overtimes with Worcester Polytechnical Institute on Oct. 26.
