Fontaine twice named CCC rookie golfer of the week

SPRINGFIELD – Western New England's Matthew Fontaine was named the Commonwealth Coast Conference’s first-ever Golfer and Rookie of the Week, for the period ending Sept. 8 and Sept. 15.

An East Longmeadow native, Fontaine led the Golden Bears in scoring with a 154 at the Trinity College Fall Invitational on Sept. 7 and 8.

In the 36-hole event, he scored a 78 and a 76 in his collegiate debut tying him for seventh place overall. Fontaine was the highest-ranking freshman in the tournament that featured 45 individuals, while Western New England tied for third in the nine-team event (since changed to fifth place in corrected scoring by school officials).

The following weekend, Sept. 14 and 15, at the Duke Nelson Tournament hosted by Middlebury College in Vermont, Fontaine posted a two-day total of 157 (78, 79) to tie for 51st as the Golden Bears finished ninth out of 22 teams.

Elms College’s Tyler Cudnik of Hampden shot a 156 (80, 76) for the Blazers, who finished eighth as a team at that tournament.

Driscoll earns MASCAC football Rookie of the Week honors

BUZZARDS BAY – East Longmeadow’s Carrick Driscoll, a freshman defensive back for the Worcester State University football team, threw an eight-yard touchdown on a fake field goal and triggered a fourth-quarter comeback with an interception in the end zone in a 15-14 win over WPI, earning his Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Rookie of the Week honors on Sept. 16.

Mack registers eight kills in pair of Elms losses

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Elms College women’s volleyball outside hitter Alexandra Mack (Wilbraham, Mass.) collected four kills and two service aces in a 3-0 (25-10,25-13, 25-15) loss to Plattsburgh State University and added four kills as the Blazers fell to Plymouth State University 3-0 (25-23, 25-12, 25-8) at the Best Western-Ground Round Cardinal Classicon Sept. 14.

Owls stun Golden Bears, take President’s Trophy

WESTFIELD – Junior Michael Mercadante of Wilbraham rushed for 140 yards on 34 carries, and the opportunistic Owls took advantage of six turnovers as Westfield State University stunned favored Western New England University 33-7 on Sept. 13.

With the shocking victory, Westfield earned its first President’s Trophy in four years over its Western Massachusetts rival.

Wilbraham’s Michael Orellana kicked a pair of field goals for the Owls.

Winer registers assist in Bentley’s win over Franklin Pierce

RINDGE, N.H. – Leah Winer of Longmeadow assisted a goal as the Bentley University field hockey team blanked Franklin Pierce University 3-0 on Sept. 11.

Voight registers three points in WNE victory

SPRINGFIELD – Nina Vital of Ludlow scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal just 9:59 into the first half as the Springfield College women’s soccer team topped cross-town rival WNE 2-0 on Sept. 10.
