The Longmeadow High School hockey team won the Spartan Cup Tournament in New Bedford, Mass., over Presidents Day weekend. They defeated a highly ranked Division II team, Plymouth South High School, 9-1, and then capped off the tournament with a 4-1 victory in the championship game against Scituate High School, the top-ranked Division III Eastern Massachusetts team. Longmeadow finished the season 19-1, going undefeated in the Western Mass Division III Berry Division, their only loss of the season being a non-league game against top-ranked Division I team Cathedral, 3-2. Longmeadow earned a spot in the state's overall top 10 rankings, including the top spot in the Division III state rankings. The Lancers are also the first Division III team to be included in the "Sweet 16," which are the top teams throughout the state being considered by the "Super 8 Committee." The "Super 8" is a round robin playoff of the top eight teams in the state, whose champion is considered the top team in the state. If not selected, Longmeadow will play in the state Division III playoffs, along with three other Western Mass high school teams: Westfield, East Longmeadow and Ludlow. The team is pictured here with their trophy after winning the Bishop Stang Tournament in New Bedford.
