Karpinski, Normoyle named Swimming Scholastic All-Americans

WILBRAHAM – Wiktor Karpinski and Michael Normoyle, members of Minnechaug Regional High School's class of 2012, were recently named Scholastic All-Americans by USA Swimming.

The requirements for this status include a 3.5 GPA for the entire academic year and the achievement a cutoff time in at least one individual event.

Karpinski, now swimming at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, qualified in both the 50- and 100-yard freestyle. Karpinski swam 21.38 in the 50 and 46.42 in the 100 to win the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association (MIAA) Division 1 State Championships in both events.

Normoyle, now swimming at Springfield College, qualified in the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard individual medley (IM). Normoyle swam 57.36 in the breast to win the MIAA Division 1 State Championships States, and 1:53.99 in the IM to win MIAA Western Massachusetts Sectional Championships.

"This is a significant achievement as it combines very fast swimming with a strong performance in the classroom," Minnechaug head coach Erik Mandell said.

Miller named to MASCAC weekly honor roll

BUZZARD'S BAY – Ludlow's Kayley Miller, a senior forward for the Westfield State University (WSU) women's soccer team, earned a spot on the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference weekly honor roll after she collected a pair of goals and two assists for six points in 2-0 week for the Owls, including a marker and a pair of helpers in a 4-1 victory over Elms College.

Morin named NECC tennis player of the week

LONGMEADOW – Bay Path College sophomore women's tennis player Stephanie Morin of Springfield was named the NECC women's tennis player of the week.

Morin helped the Wildcats to a 2-0 overall and 1-0 NECC week, sweeping conference opponent Mitchell College and regional foe Albertus Magnus both 9-0.

As a No. 2 singles player, Morin won 6-0, 6-0 and 6-1, 6-2, respectively, and teamed with Symone Watson at the No. 1 doubles winning 8-2 and 8-0, respectively.

Langlois has big day at CCC qualifier

SPRINGFIELD – Steven Langlois of Wilbraham tied for medalist honors with a score of 75 as the Western New England University (WNE) men's golf team captured the Commonwealth Coast Conference Championships Qualifier Thursday at the par 72, 6433-yard Veterans Golf Course.

'Ludlow Connection' leads Owls to victory

WILLIMANTIC, Conn. – The Ludlow Connection of seniors Brittanie McGregor (two goals) and Kayley Miller (goal, assist) carried the undefeated WSU women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Eastern Connecticut State University on Sept. 19.

Smith shuts out Elms

NORTHAMPTON – Allie Rooney of Ludlow scored the Pioneers' first goal as the Smith College women's soccer team received scoring strikes from three different players in a 3-0 win over Elms College on Sept. 19.

Bay Path falls in milestone match

WORCESTER – Senior Ashley Provost of Ludlow amassed seven kills, but it wasn't enough to stop the Worcester State University volleyball team from sweeping Bay Path College 3-0 for Lancers coach Bernie Chase's 100th career win on Sept. 18.

Elms volleyball drops heartbreaker

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Elms College freshman outside hitter Alexandra Mack of Wilbraham had four kills and 11 digs, but a 15-kill, 17-dig effort against University of St. Joseph's Ciara Perez, who helped pace the Blue Jays to a thrilling, 3-2 (25-11, 21-25, 28-26, 20-25, 15-12) victory in a non-conference women's volleyball match on Sept. 18.

Pietras has top-10 finish at UMass Dartmouth Invite

DARTHMOUTH – Zach Pietras of Ludlow had a top five finish for the Pride, as he finished fourth overall with a time of 24:52.57 to help the Springfield College men's cross country team finished second out of 39 competing teams at the UMass Dartmouth Cross Country Invitational on Sept. 15.

Golden Bears top UNE

SPRINGFIELD – East Longmeadow's Jake Bartnik assisted the game-winning goal as the WNE men's soccer team beat the University of New England 1-0 on Sept. 15.

AIC golf takes third

BERLIN, Conn. – Senior Nate Pereira of Ludlow tied for ninth overall with a 10-over par 154, posting a five-over par 77 on both days as the American International College men's golf team placed third among the 10 teams competing at the 2012 Northeast Intercollegiate Championship, hosted by Post University on Sept. 16 and 17 at the par-72 Timberlin Country Club, with a two-day total of 624 (312-312).

Junior Tommy LeBlanc of Springfield tied for 32nd with a 19-over 163 (79-84).

Ogden records shutout

PAXTON – Sophomore keeper Nicole Ogden of Springfield recorded the shut-out with two saves in a 4-0 victory for the Bay Path College women's soccer team over Anna Maria College on Sept. 17.

HCC soccer notches first win

HOLYOKE – The Holyoke Community College men's soccer team was aggressive early in an 8-0 win over the Ben Franklin Institute of Technology on Sept. 15 with freshman forward Shaun Mello of Ludlow scoring two goals in the game's first 15 minutes. Seven minutes into the contest, Mello put HCC on the board with an un-assisted goal and then connected for in the 15th minute, with the help of teammate Kory Kibler.
