Local swimmers set school, pool records for Elms College Feb. 7,

CHICOPEE – Junior Aaron Starke of Chicopee, freshman Kyle Murphy of Holyoke and seniors Mark Gehring and Jonathan Girard, both of West Springfield, were part of relay teams that set new school and pool records in the Elms College men's swimming and diving team's 146-80 victory over the University of New England on Feb. 2.
Starke was part of the 200-meter medley relay that powered to a time of 1:56.05, while Murphy, Gehring and Girard made up three quarters of the 800-meter freestyle relay team that swam to a time of 9:27.80.
On the women's side, Tricia Ruell of Chicopee was part of the 200-meter medley relay team that clocked a first place time of 2:15.25 in a 150-111 loss.
Medina wins at Springfield City College Championships
SPRINGFIELD Senior tri-captain Anthony Medina of Springfield won a 3-1 decision at the 149-pound weight class during the Western New England University wrestling team's 37-12 victory over American International College (AIC) as the Golden Bears came in second place Tuesday at the Springfield City College Championships on Feb. 5.
Springfield College went 3-0 to capture the team title, while Western New England and Springfield Technical Community College both ended at 1-1, and host AIC came in last at 0-3.
Santiago leads WSU to wins
WESTFIELD – The Westfield State University (WSU) men's basketball team's balanced attack was paced by sophomore guard Jordan Santiago, a Westfield native, game high 16 points as the Owls earned a hard fought 71-69 overtime victory over MCLA.
Santiago also scored a season-high 20 points in a balanced attack as WSU posted a 73-57 victory over Bridgewater State University on Saturday, Feb. 2.
Ortiz helps pace WSU to win
NORTH ADAMS – Holyoke's Tania Ortiz also chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds as the WSU women's basketball team clamped down defensively, holding MCLA to 24 percent shooting en route to a convincing 65-43 victory on Feb. 5.
Vautrin posts week of strong efforts
CHICOPEE – Elms College freshman outside hitter Jeff Vautrin of Chicopee downed a match-high 15 kills and added 13 digs, but Endicott College, trailing 2-1 in the match, earned three straight set victories, including a 16-14 win in the fifth frame to post a thrilling 3-2 (25-21, 19-25, 19-25, 27-25, 16-14) win over the Blazers on Feb. 2.
Vautrin also floored a team-high five kills in a 3-0 (25-15, 25-8, 25-18) loss to No. 13 Massachusetts Institute of Technology on Jan. 31.
Vautrin then downed a match-best 15 kills to help spark the Blazers to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-20) victory over Bard College on Jan. 5.
