Longmeadow's Schmidt sweeps NEISDA diving championships

NORTH DARTMOUTH — It was a complete sweep for Westfield State University (WSU) Kim Schmidt as she captured the New England Intercollegiate Swimming & Diving Association (NEISDA) one- and three-meter diving championships for the fourth consecutive year at University of Massachusetts (UMass) Dartmouth on Feb. 11 and 12.

The senior standout from Longmeadow finished first out of 11 divers in the one-meter competition with 421.10 points. Bentley University's Shelly D'Aleo was a distant second with 382.60 points.

Schmidt also dominated the three-meter board, racking up an 434.05 points to easily outdistance runner-up Paige Wild of Benley (352.30 points).

"Kim saved her best for last; she was outstanding in her final competition at New Englands," WSU Head Coach David Laing said.

Roger Williams gets revenge against Golden Bears

SPRINGFIELD — East Longmeadow's Ryan Mickiewicz scored 10 points for the Western New England University (WNE) men's basketball team, but the Golden Bears dropped a 70-68 decision in another close game with Roger Williams University on Feb. 14.

The first time the two teams played on Jan. 19, WNE edged Roger Williams 69-68.

Locals earn titles at MASCAC indoor track championships

GORHAM, Maine — Westfield State captured its sixth straight Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) Men's Indoor Track & Field title as the Owls posted a 21-point victory over runner-up Worcester State at the 2012 Championships on Feb. 11.

Among those who received individual crowns was senior Patrick Regan of Wilbraham, who won the 600 meters with a time of 1:24.79.

Bridgewater State senior Carrie Robitaille of Ludlow captured an individual title in the triple jump (10.75 meters/35-03.25) in the women's championship.

Because of their strong performances, both earned spots on their respective MASCAC weekly honor rolls.

Tetreault wins battle of ranked opponents

SPRINGFIELD — American International College wrestling's senior 165-pounder Ronnie Tetreault of Ludlow posted a 3-1 sudden victory decision over Thad Frick in a 20-19 loss to visiting East Stroudsburg University on Feb. 11. Tetreault is currently ranked fourth in Super Region I at 165, while Frick is ranked sixth.

Skiffington named Rookie of the Week

LONGMEADOW — Bay Path College women's basketball star and East Longmeadow native Kayla Skiffington was named the New England Collegiate Conference Rookie of the Week on Feb. 13.

Skiffington led the Wildcats to a 2-1 week, averaging 21.3 points, 15 rebounds and three steals per contest while shooting just under 50 percent from the field.

In a 59-57 victory over Lesley on Feb. 11, the sophomore pulled down 17 boards and scored the final two of her 23 points with four seconds on the clock.

In a 63-57 win over Southern Vermont on Feb. 9, Skiffington was nine-for-17 from the field, good for 22 points, while grabbing 21 rebounds.

On Feb. 7, the sophomore scored 21 points, shooting 8-for-14 from the field, with seven rebounds and five steals in a loss to conference unbeaten Regis.

After receiving the award, Skiffington nearly recorded a triple-double, leading Bay Path in points (24), rebounds (18) and assists (seven) in a 84-72 loss to Mitchell College on Feb. 14.

Jones saves her best for last

SPRINGFIELD — Senior point guard Janae Jones of Springfield scored a career-high 18 points to lead the WSU women's basketball team to a 74-52 Senior Night victory over Framingham State on Feb. 14.

Washington posts career game

HOLYOKE — Freshman Denzel Washington of Springfield scored a season-high 14 points on 67 percent shooting, but the Holyoke Community College men's basketball team fell 76-69 to Bunker Hill Community College on Feb. 13.

Springfield falls despite career game by Berthiaume

WORCESTER — Springfield's Alex Berthiaume poured in a career-best 34 points, however, the Springfield College men's basketball team fell victim to a buzzer-beater in double overtime as it dropped an 81-79 decision to Clark University in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference clash on Feb. 15.

East Longmeadow natives key in WNE hockey victory

BOSTON — Senior forward Mike Kaselouskas of East Longmeadow potted a goal while Dave Trella and Cam Napolitan, both also of East Longmeadow, registered assists as WNE posted a dramatic 4-3 men's hockey victory over upset-minded Suffolk on Feb. 15 at Walter Brown Arena.
