SPRINGFIELD -- He's not just a hockey player, he's a mentor, a volunteer and a friend to the community.

Springfield Falcon Colin McDonald's dedication to the game and to the welfare of those in Greater Springfield this season garnered him the team's American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year Award. The 25-year-old forward from Hartford, Conn., volunteered his time as a member of the New England Farm Workers' Council School Based Mentoring Program, hosted post-game autograph sessions for youngsters and was also a regular contributor to the Falcons' live Web chats.

"It's a nice honor but working with different programs isn't about receiving awards," McDonald told Reminder Publications. "It's nice to get recognized, but I truly just enjoy making a difference with the kids and that's truly what it's about."

When asked why he dedicates his limited time off the ice to such charities, he replied, "I choose to give back because it's just something I enjoy doing, I like working with kids and overall it's very rewarding. You see the impact you have on some kids and it just makes you feel good that you can have an impact."

McDonald was a finalist for the Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, which honors the league's American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year.

"It would be a huge honor with all of the great players that have won it before, but overall it's just nice to see the smile on the kids' faces," McDonald said of possibly winning the league's award.

Josh Tordjman of the San Antonio Rampage in Texas was named as this year's American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year on April 2, following Reminder Publications' interview with McDonald.
