McDonalds to honor 81 of region's McScholar athletes at Basketball Hall of Fame

SPRINGFIELD Eighty-one high school seniors in Western Massachusetts will be honored as the region's top scholar-athletes at the 14th annual McDonald's McScholar Athlete Awards Ceremony on May 6 at Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

Students are recognized for exemplary athletic and academic achievements, strong leadership, good citizenship and high levels of integrity.

Chris Baker, a Windsor, Conn., native and current NFL player on the Denver Broncos, will be on hand to congratulate the recipients, along with their families, principals and local McDonald's owners.

The annual McScholar Athlete Awards recognizes high school student-athletes and was founded by the local McDonald's owners and operators in Western Massachusetts who have a long-standing commitment to supporting educational initiatives.

The McDonald's owners and operators created the McScholar Athlete Award program, which is the largest program of its type in Western Massachusetts, working with local high school principals.

Each year, principals nominate one male and one female student who are graduating seniors from their school based on grades, participation in a varsity sport, and school and community citizenship.
