McGregor named to Academic All-District team

WESTFIELD – Westfield State University (WSU) women's soccer standout Brittanie McGregor of Ludlow was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District soccer team.

McGregor was selected to the District I squad that encompasses NCAA Division III colleges in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine. The prestigious team was selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

The Academic All-District squad includes student-athletes from MIT, Endicott, Middlebury, Keene State, Norwich, and Wellesley.

McGregor is a senior elementary education major and has a 3.77 grade point average. The first team all-conference selection was the Owls' second leading scorer this season with 35 points and tied a single-season school record with 15 assists.

As first-team All-District selections, McGregor's name has been forwarded to the Academic All-America selection committee, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.

To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.0, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Brady named All-MASCAC

WESTFIELD – WSU junior forward Dan Brady of Wilbraham was one of four members of the men's soccer team selected to the Massachusetts State Collegiate Athletic Conference (MASCAC) 2012 all-conference team.

Brady earned second-team honors.

AIC drops conference opener

SPRINGFIELD – Sophomore forward Krista Ferrentino of East Longmeadow netted 13 points with three boards but visiting Assumption College used a pair of early second half runs to pull away from the American International College women's basketball team on its way to a 65-47 Northeast-10 victory.

In the Yellow Jackets' season opener on Nov. 11, she recorded a double-double, tallying 11 points with 10 rebounds in a 59-44 non-conference victory over Dominican College.

Golden Bears wrestling wins

SPRINGFIELD – Western New England University senior Tom Caliento of East Longmeadow won 19-3 in near fall at 174 pounds as the Golden Bears wrestling team a completed a come-from-behind 29-12 victory over Springfield Technical Community College on Nov. 11.

Senior tri-captain Anthony Medina of Springfield won by the slimmest of margins, 3-1, over Nick Perez at 149 pounds.

Locals compete at DIII New England Regionals

BUZZARDS BAY – Abby Monette, WSU freshman from Wilbraham posted 121st place individual finish for the Owls at the NCAA Division III Women's Cross Country New England Regionals with a time of 24:06.75 over the 6K layout to earn a spot on the MASCAC honor roll.

For Elms College, freshman Emma Bernard of Springfield (28:57.29), junior Kerry Ashe of Springfield (30:25.08) and sophomore Emily Taylor of Ludlow (32:54.34) competed.

Placing 39th for the Springfield College men's cross country team was Ludlow's Zach Pietras, who crossed the finish line in 25:45.67.

Blazers' junior Jesse Zina of Ludlow clocked a time of 32:38.78 to lead all Elms men's team runners.

Furtek registers wins, but Elms swimming falls

CHICOPEE – Senior Emalee Furtek of Ludlow glided to three triumphs in the 50-yard freestyle (27.51), the 50-yard butterfly (29.39) and the 100-yard individual medley (1:09.99), but the Elms College women's swimming and diving team fell to St. Joseph's College 110-101 on Nov. 10.

Furtek also added a victory in the 50-meter butterfly (32.64), but Smith College was able to secure a 133-101 victory over the Blazers on Nov. 13.
