Orellana sets WSU football record for longest field goal

WESTFIELD – Springfield’s Michael Orellana iced the Westfield State University (WSU) football team’s 37-26 victory over the Massachusetts Maritime Academy with a school record setting 42-yard field goal with 2:32 remaining in the game.

The former soccer player from Minnechaug Regional High School easily cleared the uprights to surpass the previous school record of 41 yards that was set in 1986 by Jim Duval.

Goodchild named NECC Player of the Week

ATTLEBORO – Elms College senior women’s soccer player Christina Goodchild of East Longmeadow was named New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) women’s soccer Player of the Week as announced by the league office on Oct. 21.

Goodchild earned her first weekly accolade of the season after netting a pair of game-winning goals during Elms’ 2-1 output this week. Goodchild struck the back of the net with Elms’ first of two goals in a 2-0 win over Bay Path College on Oct. 15 and then connected for the game-winning strike in a 2-1 win at Southern Vermont College in the 89th minute of play – both goals coming off corner kicks – to help the Blazers secure a pair of NECC wins.

Zucco posts two shutouts to earn MASCAC honor

BUZZARDS BAY – Nick Zucco, Worcester State University men’s soccer’s sophomore goalkeeper from Ludlow, was named to the Massachusetts State College Athletic Conference Honor Roll on Oct. 21. Zucco stopped all nine shots he faced on the week in a pair of victories for the Lancers, including five saves in a 1-0 triumph over the University of Massachusetts (UMass) Boston and four in a 2-0 victory over Salem State.

Holley helps pace WSU to second place at WNE Invitational

SPRINGFIELD – Ludlow’s Jenn Holley placed 13th out of 190 runners with a time of 20:22.25 for the 8K course as the WSU women’s cross country team finished second in the Western New England University (WNE) Invitational on Oct. 19

Mack’s smashes lead Elms past Bay Path

CHICOPEE – Elms College sophomore outside hitter Alexandra Mack of Wilbraham notched a match-high 10 kills to pace the Blazers to a 3-0 (25-8, 25-21, 25-23) victory over Bay Path College on Oct. 19.

Footit competes at Connecticut College Invitational

WATERFORD, Conn. – Elizabeth Footit of Wilbraham, Mass., registered a time of 25:04 as the Springfield College women’s cross country team placed 16th at the Connecticut College Invitational on Oct. 19.

Matroni scores as WSU beats Elms in rout

WESTFIELD – WSU freshman Kate Matroni of Hampden scored in the 12th minute to help the Owls women’s soccer team to a 6-0 win over Elms College on Oct. 17. Matroni also assisted another goal to give WSU a 4-0 lead.

Mercieri pots goal in loss to UMass Boston

BOSTON – Becca Mercieri of East Longmeadow recorded her second tally of the season to give the WNE women’s soccer team a 1-0 lead, but the Golden Bears ended up falling to UMass Boston 5-1 on Oct. 16.
