Pioneers name new head coach

LUDLOW, — "We got our man," stated Lusitano Club President and WM Pioneers founder Celso Corriea. That is all he needed to say after a long off season of interviewing and reviewing candidates for the open position.

Joe Calabrese brings "youthful experience" to the team as this young coach has a stellar coaching resume in his early career, including:
  • 2009-Present current head coach for Utica College men's soccer program

  • 2006-2009 top assistant coach, Western New England College men's soccer program

  • 2004-2005 Top Assistant Coach Westfield State College men's soccer program

  • 2010 Black Watch Premier (NY) USL Super Y U-20 head coach

  • 2010 top assistant coach for Albany Highlanders PDL — USL

  • 2008-2010 head coach, Massachusetts Olympic Development Program U-17 Boys
In addition to his top level coaching accolades, Calabrese was a part of the Junior Pioneers program as a head coach for U14-U15, U16 and U18 Boys programs.

"I am glad to be back," stated Joe Calabrese. "I have been a big part of the community as a player for West Springfield High School, Westfield State College and coaching for the Junior Pioneers."

Calabrese holds his USSF "A" national coaches license and has an advance national diploma from the NSCAA.

"There was a new sense of excitement after interviewing Joe. His commitments to coaching, having local ties to the community and experience in the PDL, as a coach, were factors in our decision to hire coach Calabrese," stated Board of Directors member Steve Scott.

The Pioneers had to part ways with Lezchek Wrona midway through the 2010 campaign. They finished out the season with a "coaching by committee" staff. Understanding that this was not the way to coach for the 20111 season, they decided to start the interview process.

"We had many quality candidates and Joe Calabrese rose to the top," commented General Manager Greg Kolodziey.

The Western Mass Pioneers will be hosting tryouts in January at Soccer City Indoor Soccer Facility in Wilbraham.
