NORTH DARTMOUTH Westfield State senior Kim Schmidt was chosen as the Diver of the Year and freshman teammate Katie Sterpka was elected the Rookie Diver of the Year. Westfield State also earned the Team Sportsmanship Award.
"Both Kim and Katie are extremely hard working and team oriented," Dave Laing, Westfield State's head coach, said. "All the hard work they put into this season really paid off."
Schmidt is the first Little East student-athlete to repeat as the top diver in the conference circuit. The senior from Longmeadow, Mass. earned a pair of All-America honorable mention citations at the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championship. Schmidt placed 12th on the three-meter and 13th on the one-meter.
She swept each event in the diving well for the fourth consecutive year at the 2012 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Championship. Schmidt broke the program record on the shorter plank with a score of 449.45 points, while easily capturing the higher board with a school record mark of 434.5 points at the regional championship meet.
She also established a new Little East meet record on the one-meter board with a total score of 249.25. Schmidt added the conference three-meter championship to her impressive resume with a total score 244.05. She was honored as the Little East Diver of the Week four times on the season.
