SC ranked 23rd in Learfield Cup standings

CLEVELAND, OHIO — Springfield College Athletics is currently in 23rd place in the overall standings of the 2011-12 Division III Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup, released last week. A total of 432 colleges were included in the Division III rankings nationally.

The rankings include all the fall sports to date. There will be further updates throughout the academic year, including a set of rankings in the late winter and another set in the summer in mid-June.

Springfield College currently has 148 points. That includes 50 points for a 17th-place finish in the NCAA women’s soccer tournament, 25 points for a 33rd-place finish in the NCAA men’s soccer tournament, and 73 points for a fifth-place finish in the NCAA women’s volleyball tournament.

Washington University of St. Louis ranks first in the fall with 372 points. The remainder of the top 10 includes Middlebury (359 points), Amherst (264), Calvin (Michigan) (262), Salisbury (Maryland) (240), Williams (230), Wisconsin-Whitewater (214), Cortland State (New York) (205), Messiah (Pennsylvania) (203), and North Central (Illinois) (195).

Springfield is the sixth-highest ranked program in New England behind Middlebury (second), Amherst (third), Williams (sixth), Bowdoin (14th), and MIT (15th). The Pride is also ranked second among New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference schools behind MIT.

The Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Director of Athletics (NACDA) and the USA Today.
